Easy! Put one in a socket next to the router (do not connect to a extension lead) then connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable. Then place the 2nd one near the pc/laptop or other device and connect again using the Ethernet cable. Then on your laptop/pc it should appear as a wired connection. As for security its different depending on each brand, but they tend to have push button security.

But how likely is it that the person next door would have any clue how to use that metallic connection to steal the connection?

Likely for me there are two elderly sisters so no threat there

By metallic connection I simply mean their sockets are electrically connected to yours with no galvanic isolation between them so the risk is pretty much the same as it is for WiFi, although WiFi can be accessed more easily from outside.

Ah I see but i'm guessing that more common if living in a flat for example!
