Depends how many ports you need If just 8 then that would do you fine.

I recently wired up my house but needed a total of 17 sockets even for a small house - 5 by the TV (consoles/sky/popcorn hr etc), 2 by the sofa, 2 in the hall, 2 in the kitchen, 4 in the bedroom (2 by bed, 2 where TV is), and 2 ports in the office for the computer.

All adds up so you might want a slightly bigger one. I think netgear do a 16 port one, or for ~ £180 you can get a 24 port HP one (fanless) like this if you shop around. I have that one and i'ts working great for me http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/...LAID=405928042

Re: Synology NAS 5.5 hrs to Backup 250GB?????

It sounds a lot but trust me - if you are going to the hassle of running cat5e (cat5e is fine for gigabit, and at £35 for 300m its a lot cheaper than cat6) you should be running double what you think you will need at first - it's much cheaper than running more cable.

Someone on this forum told me that when I was planning..and I definitely don't regret it - I could even do with 2 more ports due to furniture placement (this is just a 2up-2 down style house!)

Also running to a synology Diskstation too btw, 410j..not tested read/write performance but it does it's job nicely enough for the things I backup.

Re: Synology NAS 5.5 hrs to Backup 250GB?????

This sounds like a silly question even as I type it I am sure there is an obvious answer, but say you have 10 points around the house with standard square plates mounted on the wall.............

What happens at the switch point location - surely you dont have 10 plates alongside on the wall ?

Sorry for being stupid - but how would that interface with a wall?

Its not a stupid question. The concentrator panels aren't really suited to wall mounting. You would more likely put them in a cupboard and have the switch in there as well. There is no need to have the switch near you.
