H50 i5 at 4.5Ghz

I reckon 6GHz should be possible, at the end its £50 worth of cooling power we are talking about.

if the chip is capable of 4.5ghz it is possible, stability on the other hand may be an issue depending on the heat it kicks out.

Don't you have to run them at fairly high voltages to achieve those sorts of OCs?

Should be fine - the 3XS guys are doing 4.5GHz with Corsair A50s, which are quite a bit behind the H50s

Thanks guys. It appears from the research I've done so far the Sandy Bridge Chipset paired with an i5 2500k will overclock pretty easily with a good air cooler.

It seems like only a small voltage increase, say 1.35v should be OK for 4.5Ghz.

My problem is restricted space in the case ( Cosmos S with large side fan ) hence the H50 or H70 should be ideal. Looks like the H50 will be the way to go and save a few quid in the process.

I believe the sandy bridges will generally get up to mid 4s on air cooling purely by bumping the multi (i.e. no voltage messing involved), but you could check back the Hexus review: they got their i5 2500K to 4.4GHz (iirc) on air. Whether you'll get a 2500K to 4.5Ghz on an H50 is going to be chip dependent: as with all things overclocking, you can't guarantee anything. However, the indications from the reviews I've read suggest you should be able to get there or thereabouts.

I'm not sure how well it performs on intel CPUs but I would say the cooling efficiency is not *much* better than a high end air solution.

It would be outperformed maybe 10% by a twin fan Megahalem setup or a Noctua D14 but on a par with air coolers in its price range. As space is the issue however, it seems a sensible choice.

Another alternative would be the Antec Kuhler, which is £4 cheaper but a half generation ahead of the H50 (both having been designed by the same OEM).

Actually, looking at these temperatures (http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=4) it's doing about 7.5C better than the H50 so I would take it over the H50.

Fantastic thanks for that. I thought the H50-70 were the only coolers of that class available. Back to the research !
