Current pc had CD writer and DVD rom player. Thinking of getting DVD writer, NEC 2500 or 2510, would it be handy to have the DVD rom on the same machine to do straight copies if needed. The kids machine will get the CD writer and again would it be wise to keep their current CD player on their machine with the CD writer.

Two drives in a machine are always good for making on the fly copies (providing it can be done with what you're copying.)
If you only have two IDE channels, and all drives are IDE, then here's my advice on the master/slave setup.
HDD should be primary master as always.
Put one optical drive as primary slave, and the other as secondary master, so that drive to drive transfers aren't as interrupted. Put the least used optical drive on slave (probably the reader.)
