    9800 pro and zalman cooler

Ive managed to get my hands on a ZM80A-HP (the large gold one) and was wondering if this is fine for running a 9800pro passive.

Ive check Zalman site and they dont say much about the 9800pro (i think they mention the 9700pro being fine, and the ZM80C-HP recommends the additional fan, the the ZM80C-HP weighs a bit less than my one)

Ive currently go it installed, but have cable tied a 80mm fan ontop just incase. Im not going to be overclocking the card.

    Would appreciate any comments

Unless absolute silence is your aim having some directed airflow is always a good idea. I'm intending on using the same heatsink for whichever 9x00Pro card I end up getting, and I'm planning on having an 80mm fan on a 5v/12v fanbus so I can turn it up while playing games but down in 2D work. I'd advise not going completely passive unless you have some major case airflow.

I'm using the zm80a with a zalman bracket with 9800Pro and fan over it - provides excellent cooling with airflow, gets a bit hot (but still very much stable) as passive.

i have one on a 9700 heavily overclocked and it does get very hot. 9800's have a slightly higher vcore too..... so would get hotter still. esp if you then overclock that...
Zalman recommend that for 9800's you purchase their aditional cooling fan to bolt onto the side of the heatsink. But there arent mounting points in the gold version 1.0 as far as i know, only the grey version 2.0

I settled for having a 120mm vantec stealth mounted in the side panel blowing air through the whole thing and cooling the mem too. Very very quiet and keeps the wholw thing very very cool

CPUCITY has stealths cheaper than most.

    Hope this helps..

Thanks for all the responses guys - they were much appreciated

I geuss ill keep the fan on it for now - its not too loud (YS tech silent) but its 3 pin so cant 7/5 v mod it.

Cpu city does have the best price on the stealths, but I was thinking of getting an evercool from tcs for my cpu (<30db and 80 cfm) and placing my silenx over my gfx, north and south bride all hooked up to a aerogate

I ran my 9800 pro with that heatsink fine for months with no problems. As long as you're not planning on o/cing the card you wont need the fan on.I put a 80mm fan on as well when i was o/cing the card and it still ran well then too. It's not a o/cing cooler but it's class if it's silence you're after.I had to remove my gpu shim first tho.Bit of a scary moment!!!!!

I had the Zalman Gold coloured heat pipe on my Saphire 9800 non pro.

It ran overclocked at 400/350mhz for months without any problems, completely passive.
