    Modular PSU's?

How many modular PSU's are there out there? I can only recall seeing one example, and that appears to be an Antec:

    http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/psu-31.html

Anyway, there's always more molexes than required on a high spec PSU, so why not modularise the connectors? I suppose the only problem then is controlling how connectors are added to preving overloading the cables...

    Thoughts?

Its a good idea but doing that puts a lot of the responsibility on the end user who could overload cables as you mentioned. As long as they came equipped with good clear guidelines and instructions then they would be a boon as you could customise the amount of cabling hanging around your case to suit your requirements.

I know I always used to hate hiding spare cables when I used ATX sized machines

While a good idea in one sense the fact that you have to use bulky connectors does mess the asthectics up :/

Who actually reads instructions when building a PC anyway?!

The only thing I dislike about them, is the way the molexes the extensions plug into are on short leads rather than fitted into the side of the PSU. TBH making any psu modular like that should only take a few minutes.

I remember seeing someone on the bit-tech forums who had fitted the connectors into the side instead - be blown if I can't find the link now though.

When on earth is Gnome's orac? Some sort of mystical power-producing voodoo crystal?

Oh, that beauty! I thought it was too good for a name!

Maybe when I stick some pots on the V-sense lines of my PSU to tweak the voltages I'll also do some "modularising" of my own.

Ive been planning to do this for a looooong time - but im lazy. My cwt has far too many cables...

Also couldnt think of an easy, good way to make them modular. I want to get a sheet of 5mm plexy, or something, cut holes for the connectors and epoxy them in place. This can then mount in a psu case window I have yet to cut.

Molex's aint good enough, there bulky, too big, and tbh difficult to attach and remove. ATX pin header style connectors would do, rapid electronics sell them in 2x2 iirc, and I think kustom also has uv blu00 ones, so might have to use them.

I will also redo all of the wireing, probably using wire rated to 20A or higher (iirc stock psu cables are about 9A but will have to check) to prevent overleading. I want most molex things to all goto one cable - hdd, dvdrw, fans, pump, fan controler, lcd regulator, and my 9700 power connector. They are all in the same part of teh case so it makes sence...

Last problem is my psu, the CWT550w ADP has almost no space inside, its difficult to even pull the lid of theres so much in there!. I may have to add a box to the side, one like this maybe: (the bl00 one, anyone know which order code it is?)
    http://www.rapidelectronics.co.uk/rk...6463&XPAGENO=2
This could also house my ccfl inverter(s) if I add any.

It would be hard to overload cables using just fans, drives, and ccfls. drives suck the most power, about 15w, which from the 5A rail is 3A. Youd need atleast 3 hdds to overlead a cable - thats assuming its all from one rail also.
So yes running 3 hdds, a dvdrw, 10 fans and a ccfl off one molex cable split many times would probably result in a fire after about an hours use the cable heats up, plastic melts, bubbles and burns
Running half your gfx card of a molex, should not really be shared as that could take probably upto 45w dependning what agp can do :E
