    Which would you buy?

I am contemplating getting a new setup but I am not sure whether to get an AMD 3200 64bit cpu or a pentium 4 3.2ghz cpu. Which would be faster as I mainly play games with my X800 being bottlenecked by my current setup.

AMD 64 seem to outperform the P4s.

Might be worth waiting to see what the next generation of socket 775 chips bring out as they are due out any time now. Though they will also have a next generation price to go with them.

Gaming is definately the forte of the A64, but if you do an amount of media work,. eg with audio or video then a pentium is your best bet.

Don't forget that the 3200+ "only" has 512k of L2 cache, compared with the higher models which come with 1mb. Hence why the 3400+ costs 50% more than the 3200+.

Personally, I'd still go with the Athlon 64 as I'm sure it's game performance that you want the most.

I loved the P4 on 875 platform, but with 925 Intel seems to have abandoned the enthusiasts (overclocking worries, horrific socket, PCI Express GFX only, small performance decrease...). Plus prescotts heat problems are getting worse.

With AMD providing more bang for buck, upcoming 64bit support, and performance Intel can't match - how can you recommend anything else?
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.
