Re: good sound card for beyer dt770's?

    Hi guys,

I found this thread as I have just purchased a DX 7.1 Asus sound card and some DT770s.

The DX card works great with my 5.1 logitech speakers.

My headphones should arrive on Tuesday. If you like OP, I can test it out and post here giving a mini review of what the setup sounds like?

  2. Received thanks from:

I have 770s and i use an Asus D2X, sounds awesome!

Genuinely noticeable difference between the asus and the onboard sound. Not sure you would need an amp though, the outputs on the asus are pretty good and definately enough to drive a 250Ohm set of cans.

Thanks for sharing that Biscuit. I was concerned whether or not I would need an amp. I have also ordered the FiiO e5 so I can use the headphones with my ipod. They are the 250 ohm versions.

I am hoping the DX will have enough power to drive the DT770s 250 ohms without the need for the amplifier.

Just a quick update for you Menace. I received my DT770s earlier and have been using them since I got home from work earlier at about 5pm.

Anyway, straight to the point. The DT770s' work really well with the DX sound card. I cannot compare the sound to the DS that you currently have but rest assured the sound level goes way higher than necessary and sounds fantastic. Theres a good amount of base and the sound is very clear. Sorry I cannot be more descriptive Im not an audiophile. (Currently listening to some FLACs and have windows volume at 35% and the volume on VLC media player at 80%). I am currently having some trouble using them via the front panel input but I think its a driver issue more than anything else.

For conveinience Iam going to leave my logitech 5.1 system plugged into the sound card and use the 3.5mm socket in one of the logitech speakers.

The sound is certainly more impressive than my old combination of £20 Sony cand and the onboard sound.

If you have any specific questions about the set up I will do my best to answer.

One thing to look out for on DT770s, they can develop a rattle in one of the cans. Fortunately they are fairly easy to maintain so its not too much hassle to repair. One of mine has started to do this now so it looks like im going to need to buy a replacement driver
I have had mine like 3-4 years.

Thanks for the heads up Biscuit. These are my first pair of 'enthusiast' headphones so I will certainly be looking after them.

Have you modified yours? I read online something about removing the padding in the earpieces for a better sound.

no i havent and wouldnt. I love it when 'audiophiles' claim they know better than professional audio companies who supply top-ranking studios. Dont modify your Bayers if at all possible, by that i mean, if they start to fall apart, by all means fix them with duc-tape... thats a mark of a pro
