    Help! Lost 800 mhz!

I installed my new heat sink and it took friggin ages. i was afraid to remove my motherboard to do it and had to put a nasty amount of pressure on it to get it to go in after an hour of trying..

booted up now to be given a warning that my "Cpu is either damaged or has been changed", and went into control panel to check my specs..

It now says i have 1.09 ghz, when before i booted there was about 1.87 ... I know that its my own fault, but is it possible to fix it, and if not, will i get laughed at when i ask cpu for a replacement on warrantee?

What heatsink was it? And have you tried changing the fsb from the bios to see if its just that?

Have you tried resetting the bios via the jumper and going from there?

Can you give us detail on what board cpu before and after.

you're gonna have to explain the BIOS part. i've never been that great tech wise and tend to stay away from the more complicated bits

Look in your mobo manual for where the bios reset jumper is. It should be labeled aswell. It also should be arranged so that its three pins in a line with a jumper covering two pins. What you need to do is unplug your pc, move the jumper so that its covering the other pin and the middle pin (which was already covered by the jumper). Then wait around 10 secs and move the jumper back into its original position. If you could tell me what mobo you are using i should be able to find out where the jumper is.

ah ok. Do you know what mother board you have and do you have the manual for it handy?

I'll hazard a guess that it's an athlon system and you have a barton 2500XP and it looks like for some reason your fsb as dropped from the standard 166MHz to 100MHz.

Try selecting "load optimised defaults" in BIOS to start with.
If that doesn't work we'll try to get you to set it up manually but for that we need to know which motherboard & processor you have.

Its either delete or f1. Changes on some boards. Should come up with a blue screen with some text on?

Yep, the best thing you can do kirb is go off and reaqd as much as you can and ask as many question as you need to and fiddle a bit with it. This sort of thing you'll only learn by messing about and making a right dogs dinner of it and fixing it to break it again

    Oh yes and I'm
