    Laptop graphics issue

    Anyone come across this?

My (work) laptop starts to boot thenafter the preliminary load, that is the WinXP logo drops off to be replaced by the login prompt, the screen goes black and that's it. Can't go any further.

I got around it by rebooting in safe mode and reinstalling the graphics drivers. Restart, no problem. Only now it's done it again and i can't even get in through safe mode. Get the pop up saying windows is starting up and it hangs right there.

    Any clues?

He wouldn't see the login prompt if this was the case.

iirc the drivers have loaded by time it hits the login screen hence the resolution and refresh rate change from the boot logo to the login screen. Otherwise windows drivers wouldn't be able to support high refresh rates and high resolutions.

Ok well from here I would suggest that maybe the correct display drivers are not being used.

I have had issues in the past with laptops that need the official display drivers from the manufacturer rather than the actual card drivers.

I get the boot logo. It dies at the login prompt, that is it doesn't display the login prompt. We've rebuilt it once and I think it is as flash says, HDD corruption. That was going to be the next option but I figured I'd try and exhaust other avenues first.

when you say rebuilkt - was it a brand new clean partition rebuild or just a reinstall of xp?

if its hard disk corruption you shhould get like norton diskdoctor or sumthing to analyse it - its not bad at picking errors up.
