My Shuttle just got noisy! - advice please

    My Shuttle just got noisy!

Ok I just added a new cpu and graphics card, that I acquired to my SN41G2 shuttle, the shuttle was running well and was quite. Then I put the lid back on and the noise just trebled! The fan on the Geforce Leadtek FX5600 has some form or wire mesh and with the case being so close to it there is like a vacuum noise. I have included two pics, just in case that helps. Can some one give me some options? My Cpu sits at around 50˚ and my case temps are about 43˚ I’m already missing my motherboard fan as that packed up, so heat may be an issue.

Yup, it sounds like a heat problem, the shuttles can get quite noisy if they're in standard trim.
The temperature rises so it spins the fans faster to get rid of the heat, which in turn makes it louder..

There are a few things you can do to combat that though, there's the silent x powersupply for one, and you can also replace the standard exhaust fan with a pair of quieter fans runnning in a push/pull arrangement, if that's still not enough you can get Kustom to do a case mod that will replace the side venting with some more efficient mesh..

Stoo just explain the push/pull bit. You mean one fan as usual on the ICE radiator, and a second one elsewhere? On the back? or inside the case?

yup, one on the inside blowing out, and another in the same place, but on the outside sucking, I'm it's been posted about somewhere on here before..

    Ye oldie ascii diagram:

Inside Case.. Fan Blowing >>> |Back of Case|>>>> Fan Sucking

Mounting the fans requires a bit of ingenuity and a few nuts and bolts (B&Q)

that mesh guard on the geforce will create sum noise aswell ide have thought, reason i know is becouse i modded an extra 70mm intake on my sn41g2 and im using the same type of mesh (a little bigger tho) as a filter for the fan to suck the air through and the noise that it creates when the fans @ full rpm is quite shocking (the speed of the air being sucked past the holes in the mesh) it sounds a little like a very quiet dyson lol.

sorry i did not make myself clear (again ) it's the gcard kicking up all the noise, the shuttle is being nice and quiet,, it's that mesh grill thing on the gcard, if the shuttle lid is on it makes a vacumme noise, is it safe to take off?

yep u can take it off bobby sixkiller,it wont do any harm aslong as you regularly clean the dust/fluff etc from inside ure shuttle and fans etc, i think its basically there to add to the overall image of the cards cooler although the mesh grill does generally serve the purpose of trapping hairs and fluff etc before it reaches the fan blades themselves but its a double edged sword in that respect becouse if these mesh grills arent frequently cleaned they get clogged up and basically the cooler would eventually suffocate if left too long.

It wouldn't hurt to improve the case air flow either

Reverse the ICE fan on the back, and put an 80mm exhaust in the top of the Shuttle.

    Or 2 60mm if an 80mm won't fit.

How much quieter is the Silent X PSU compared to the original? Or is it just enough if I replace the original PSU fans with Adda?

silent X is way quieter and also has SATA power connectors, well worth the upgrad in my opinion.

Bobby replace that mesh with some material from a pair of tights for air filtering goodness, just remember to clean it every couple of weeks.

Also swap the stock ICE fan for a noiseblocker or similar.

Alternately you could do what I did and watercool.

The PSU fans are much quieter in the silent X... I've also had buzzing from the non silent X PSUs under load (the achme ones IIRC) which the silent X PSUs just don't do. They seem to run cooler to. So well worth it IMO.
