    budget question

Does anyone have any suggestions for a £500 budget build around a AMD Athlon64 3200?

I only need a mobo, RAM, processor and graphics card (the guy says he wants to play games)

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

I built one using an AMD Athlon XP 2600. I don't know if this helps, or if the two are similar, but see my sig for details. The total came to around £550 including P+P and monitor, mouse and keyboard which you won't need.

Oooops - I just saw you wanted it for gaming. You'd want a better graphics card (although this one's not bad). I've heard good things about the radeon 9800, and I think you can get them for about £120 - could be wrong though!

For the price (about £130), the 9800 Pro is, from what I've seen, an excellent card, and extremely good value for money.

Do I need to run Windows XP with this setup, or can W2K cope?

Hmmm... if you only want the MoBo, Ram, GFx and CPU then this:

    Athlon 64 3200+ OEM £140
HSF - Any decent one £15
    Asus K8VSE Deluxe £80
    GeIL 512MB Dual Kit £60
    GeForce 6800 £200

All for £495.. are you sure you dont need a new PSU, or new bigger HDD etc?

Aaarrgghh, now he says he wants a X800 graphics card, and W XP. So I am looking at 300 just for the graphics card. I don't think it is going to come to less than 500 punds.

um, no, its not. About £650 is the cheapest its going to go with windows XP and an X800 with an A64.

Still, the system I suggested is more that reasonable, and you could shave off a bit, say get the non-deluxe MoBo, and get win XP for about £65, and shop around a bit for better prices, and then you're looking at about £525.

you can buy genuine coas for XP by themselves for around £30 (if you already has a "backup" disk then you could save a bit more) but if he wants a x800/6800 then he should really extending his budget. he will need a beefy psu if he doesnt already.

'Bout 400W+. depends on how good the manufacturer is as to how many of those watts are really available though.

Asus K8V/SE Deluxe S754 VIA k8t800 ATX Sound Gig lAN Firewire USB 2.0
    FSB 800 Retail Box £68.64
    AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64bit 3200+ 754pin 512 L2cache OEM CPU £126.81
    Coolermaster Athlon 64 Cooler upto AMD3700 (only) Skt754 £4.95

    Any comments?

    Rob

P.S. does this mobo have a limit on processor rating as such?
