Pioneer DVR-108 vs NEC ND3500

I've read a few reviews but they don't really help decide which one is best. Anyone here got one of the drives?

I installed the 3500 2 days ago. It is absolutely marvellous. Quick and very reliable. So far burnt around 30Gb of data including video (some over 2Gb), music and standard documents. Nothing has gone wrong or ended up as a coaster. I have burnt onto standard 80min PC Line CD's from Currys and also ANV Ritek DVD's from www.svp.co.uk. All burning has been done with Nero 6 Ultra.

It comes highly recommended from me.

My dad also installed one the day before me and I've heard no problems from him.

Im pretty much in the same boat, Ive been reading various reviews from forums with the same title and other reviews and Ive come to no easier decision.

Which one's cheaper? IIRC it's the NEC, so go for that one. I would.

They are both good drives. With the Ritek G04 media, you should be fine with either. I got the Pioneer (the previous model, as the 108 wasn't out then) and it's burnt 50 DVDs without a single problem.

Replaced my old Pioneer 104 for a 108, very pleased with its performance. Installed a NEC 3500 in a m8's pc and there not much netween them. They are both good drives, just go for the cheapest.

Think I'm going to go with the pioneer 108 just because from what I've read it seems to be the higher quality drive.

You wont go wrong with either, but id get an NEC.
Even if its only for the large amount of 3rd party support.

I think what he means is that if everyone else (say, here) had the same model, then troubleshooting should be easier.

Just like if every AMD user had an Abit NF7 or something

Im more swayed to the pioneer too . . . it may be just a name, but I know my luck when I buy a never-previously-purchsed manufacturers product for the first time

the pioneer uses the NEC chip for its drive, so buy the cheaper one

technically there the same, same chipset

apprently the NEC one, as its NEC's own is slightly tweaked for faster burns, so in theory, there the same, but NEC has the slight edge, see my thread in bargain hunt, its also the cheapest www.spv.co.uk have it for 49.98 at the mo, which is a crazy deal (15 less than 108?) and better ! plus its 99p shiping still if you hurry
