It was just like fecking E-Bay when you see this auction you can't afford and go "feck, I've got 3 minutes to make up my mind!!" so you put in this massive bid and win the bugger.

I was sitting there with a 3500+ and a 3800+ in my basket going "which one, which one" and finally this voice said "25% off a 3800+ - that's a lot of money....." so I thought "feck" and kicked the £150 (ex VAT) 3500+ out of my basket and paid. Two minutes later I thought "Did I do something stupid?", even though I am still kinda within budget....

Flip side if you had a 3500+ and someone said for an extra £88 you could have the 3800+ which is currently on sale, what would you do?

if you're still within your initial budget (before you heard of the 25% pcw discount) then don't worry about it! You've got a marginally faster system for the same price you initially wanted, that's the best way to look at it. Then you don't feel guilty!

That's exactly how I am looking at it. My price was between £1000-£1300 with a 3500+ onboard. I've managed to go upto a 3800+ with an increase of £80. I don't think that is too shabby!

OC is silly - stick to buying good s**t then if in 2 years your system is slow then OC it.

a 3800 will last performance wise for a fair while - real time software is gonna take years to catch those speeds up, if you do lots of batch processing or movie making the slowest part will be the hard drive (always, not urs in particular)

honestly i would have done what you did, always go for the best you can afford.

if you were going to OC the 3500 enuf to notice you would need to spend 50 - 100 quid on cooling especially if you wanted it to be quiet.

THANK YOU! I feel vindicated and my post-consumer guilt has gone. Now I just need to finish finding a cheap place for my MoBo, RAM and HDD (when I have worked out what I am buying!)

    Building similar computer

Hi. I am building a similar computer and have heard about compatability issues between Asus mobo's and some memory. I was just wondering if the Asus A8V Deluxe is compatible with Crucial CT6464Z40B. Any help would be much appreciated.

I believe it is. I was going to get that memory, but in the end decided that as I was (in the end!) spending soo much on the rest of my kit, I might as well splash out the extra £60 and get some uber-memory. See my sig for what I eventually got. MoBo and hard-drives I got from Scan, Memory from Dabs (much cheaper than Scan at present).
