PC Spec?

Hey, after all your brilliant help on my last post, I've been doing a fair bit of reading, on various options for building my gaming pc. Below is the new spec I've come up with, its a bit more exact...

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Retail)
CPU Cooler -
Motherboard - Asus A8V Deluve (with WiFi)
Case - CoolerMaster CAV-T03
PSU -
Memory -
Graphics Card - XFX Geforce 6800 GT
Monitor - Viewsonic VP201B
Sound Card - SB Audigy2 ZS 7.1
Hard Drive 1 - WD740GD Raptor 74Gb (Windows, Programs)
Hard Drive 2 - WD2500JD SATA 250Gb (Storage, Documents)
Optical Drive 1 - NEC ND3500 Dual Layer Double Format 16xDVDRW Silver
Optical Drive 2 - Sony 16DVDx48CDRW Silver
Floppy Drives - Silver Floppy Drive
Keyboard - Microsoft Black Multimedia
Mouse - Microsoft Black Optical

As you can see, theres a couple of things missing, in particular, the CPU Cooler, PSU and Memory. Any suggestions on what I can use for these? (I want at least 1Gb of memory)

Anyhooos, what do you think of the spec so far? Anything that would really not work? Hopefully I'll start ordering parts in the next month or so

my mates got almost identical spec, cpu, mobo, wifi, graphics card....even down the brand

its a beast i tell you now, jeez even the same case !!! its a beast, it slows when theres action but on doom 3 ultra settings 1024, with a bit of aa and af he gets 60 FPS :|


as for memory, hes got 1gb PC3200XMS Corsair, probably a wise choice

Looking like a mean machine atm.

Would recommend a Thermalright XP-120 as a cpu cooler. Expensive but will do the job very well with the right fan.

As for PSU make sure its a good brand, Antec, Enermax, Tagan, Thermaltake etc.. and at least 400W+. Im using a Tagan 480 jobbie at the moment and I've been very happy with it.

Don't know much about memory but apparently super low latencies only give you 3-4% speed increase so I personally wouldnt spend too much.

CPU Cooler - use the stock one that comes with the Retail chip or go for the new ASUS Star Ice.

PSU - 480W Tagan TG480-U01 Whisper quiet 21db (10 x Molex, 2 x SATA). Incidentally, the Asus comes with 2 x Molex-SATA converters so you can have 3 SATA drives no problemo.

Memory - 1Gb (2 x 512MB) Corsair DDR400 TwinX-XL Pro or Platinum 2-2-2-5 (X1024-3200XLPRO with Activity LEDs, X1024-3200XLPT without).

Hard Drive 1 - WD740GD Raptor 74Gb (Windows, Programs)
Hard Drive 2 - WD2500JD SATA 250Gb (Storage, Documents)

Hard Drive 1 - WD740GD Raptor 74Gb
Go for a 10GB Windows Partition and give the rest over to your Documents. Need more space? Get another one and RAID them or get 2 * 80GB 7K250 drives.
Ensure you put this drive on your PROMISE SATA CONTROLLER.

Hard Drive 2 - WD2500JD SATA 250Gb
Get 2 * 160GB drives instead and run them as RAID 0. Only have your programs on here.
Ensure you put this array drive on your VIA SOUTHBRIDGE SATA CONTROLLER.

Do this and your PC will poo over everybody elses, except for mine which is going to be nearly identical except that I have the 3800+.

Are you going to overclock the 3500+? It so, ignore my hard-drive instructions and go for the ABIT AV8 3rd Eye board. It overclocks better than the ASUS A8V Deluxe but only has 2 SATA ports so you cannot put my configuration in - although you can use your original specs or put in a massive RAID array.

u should go ocz eb 3700 on the memory its undoubtedly the best stuff for a64

For CPU Cooler I'd go for the ThermalRight SLK948U which is entirely copper - the XP90 is aluminium. copper > aluminium

As for ram the Corsair XL stuff is good, but a gig of OCZ Platinum DC 3200 is about £30 cheaper (bout £170) and is marginally faster according to some review i saw the other day but cant remember where.

The XP-90 and XP-120 have a copper base/heatpipes and aluminium fins, they are just nickel plated
