Well I have had lots of problems installing Win xp and getting it working ok on my new sata drive. It seems to be working now so how do I go about testing the drive and making sure it is running in sata mode.

er. If you managed to install xp on it then isn't that indication enough that it's working?

Yes but how do I know if its running at the right speeds?

It will be running at the correct speeds, but just to check you can open device manager and select "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers", right click on primary or secondary depending on what your hard drive is hooked up to and select properties. Press the advanced settings tab and your hard drive should be set to Ultra DMA Mode 5!
