OK I've bought the Supermicro 8-Port SAS/SATA Card.

    That seems expensive.

Can I just buy any cable with this in the name?: SFF-8087 to 4x
What about this for under £10?: 3Ware multi lane SFF8087 to 4x SATA fan out cable 0.5 metres, single cable

Don't have much experience with SAS cards, SAS HDDs and/or cables but I would say it is the right thing for you to buy.

Just to assure if I were you I would contact Scan support and ask them describing my situation and asking if that cable is the right cable for my card.

http://www.span.com/product/SAS-SATA...A-Device~15684 is what you'll be needing, though the one you linked to also seems to be a forward breakout cable and as such should be fine. You'll obviously need 2 to attach 8 disks though.
