    Is 27 inch 1440p such a good improvement over 24 inch 1080p?

I recently saw a 4K display in richer sounds and instantly fell in love - it looked simply outstanding. Naturally, I can't yet afford a display for 500 GBP, and I don't want to spend that much really because my computer cost me 600GBP! Is 1440p still a big improvement over 1080p? I know the DPI will be higher, but does it make a large difference? I don't really want to spend stupid money, but I'd preferably like a glossy display (I think) - matte looks horrible and lifeless compared to the glossy display of my mac book retina. But, I don't know if glare will be an issue due to the positioning of the monitor compared to the window.

    I don't understand the question.

You like the idea of 4K, which is £500 (for the TN option, which is the only realistic one right now). Then you start talking about 1440p, which is only just under £500 (for IPS at least).

Are you suggesting that you'd like 4K, but you'd settle for 1440p if you could get one that's dramatically cheaper?

I wouldn't worry about the gloss vs matte question until you've settled on resolution and IPS vs TN.

I have the option to get a Korean monitor, or there are options on OC UK where I'm able to purchase monitors in the 300 GBP range, which is more affordable.

Could this dullness I have witnessed with matte displays be as a result of them all being TN (which they have been).

I love my 1440p ISP panel, I completely agree with Jim as don't write off matte until you use a good quality ISP panel which is going to cost you the best part of £430~

Also what are you planning to do on this monitor? a £600 computer wouldn't power a 3840 x 2160 resolution if you are doing anything graphically intense.

Gaming, but since you can run 4K at 1080p to give you a 4:1 pixel ratio, gaming will still look sharp, so no problem there. Because of this idea, I could also apply the same approach to a 1440p monitor giving me moar FPS in games (which admittedly I don't play all that often, even though that's why I built my PC). I don't do any graphics intensive tasks really. My setup is as follows:

i5 3470, GTX 760 and 8GB of RAM, which is, I think, sufficient to run a 4K display for general tasks.

Re: Is 27 inch 1440p such a good improvement over 24 inch 1080p?

I have only very recently started to use a 1440 27'' display.

My feelings on it are mixed.

I do not game, fast games make me feel dizzy. I wanted to have two windows side by side at a decent width resolution wise, which I could not do at 1920 well. I'm not sure how game display will scale.

You have the pixel space to spread out a bit, which is nice. I find the higher resolution makes things look smaller and I do find that a bit strange, I may get used to it.

The screen width is 3'' more but the screen does not feel as big a step up as I expected it would because of the higher pixel per inch, that said I would not go back to a 1920 x 1080.

    I also use a 1920 x 1200 HP and that I think a 1440 screen is not a big step up from.

I have an AOC with a samsung panel S-pls I think its has a nice look, It has the IPS glow at angles about the same as a dell or LG IPS screens I have used. Black contrast about the same as other IPS type screens I have used.

I know that if I wanted a 4K screen it would need to be 32'' at least with my old eyes, your milage may vary as they say !!.

Ah, fair enough. Some people do hate the anti-glare screens, and I think Dell's in particular has acquired a lot of hate. Personally, my monitors already catch the light more than I'd like, even with the anti-glare, so I'm a big fan.

I think the short answer here is that you can't afford the 4K, so forget about them for now. Question is, will 2560*1440 be a big difference to 1920*1080? I haven't used both, but I'm inclined to say yes.

Have a look at this, and compare 1920*1080 to 2560*1600 - it's a pretty big change in real estate. And if you're planning to game at 1080p anyway, you'll only be noticing the difference on the desktop.

Re: Is 27 inch 1440p such a good improvement over 24 inch 1080p?

I'd be gaming in 720p with a 1440p monitor to give me the 4:1 pixel ratio - my graphics card doesn't offer enough horse power to drive games at the settings I want with good from rates.

I think my only option is to try one out - at my college we use iMacs for Music Technology, and even though they're 1080p they look so much better - colours are so much more vibrant compared to my monitor, but that might be due to the fact that the iMacs are IPS. Problem is, I don't know if glare will be an issue until I've already got the monitor
