Moors law! is that something to do with the beast of bodmin!! :-)

Moores law stated that the number of transistors on a chip would double every 18 months. The opteron sure has a lot of transistors with 1 meg of L2 cache!

If you want to get pedantic...

"The observation made in 1965 by Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since the integrated circuit was invented. Moore predicted that this trend would continue for the foreseeable future. In subsequent years, the pace slowed down a bit, but data density has doubled approximately every 18 months, and this is the current definition of Moore's Law, which Moore himself has blessed. Most experts, including Moore himself, expect Moore's Law to hold for at least another two decades"

Its certainly got the bragging rights!

    Brad: My CPU is a P9 10GHz
Wade: My CPU is a Athlon2048 6GHz that can out bench your 10GHz intel!

Bob: My CPU is at the speed of light

That is one very impressive benchmark!! As I said before in another thread, I'm eagerly awaiting for the 'Hammer family to scale... Once these CPUs hit higher frequencies, then we can see what Intel has gotten up its sleeves to counter such a strong competitor. In the end, competition is good for us, the consumer.

interesting but how many people play at 640x480
    with minimum detail setting ?

You're right in questioning that and the answer is probably none or not many. However, testing at very low resolution and low details will thoroughly test the speed and efficiency of the geometry and setup stages of the GPU. A benchmark never the less.

my guess would be were going to see about 5fps better max when it comes to normal gaming res and detail

Why are the Unreal Benchmaks conducted at 640x480? Surley a realistic resolution is 1024x768 at least nowadays?

they are testing the CPU not the graphics card!

Benchmarking at low res limits any video bottle necks. The percentage difference between the opteron and P4 will remain the same in cpu limited situations.

however if you play at 1600x1200 with 16xAF and 6XAA even the radeon 9800pro becomes the bottleneck in most situation, all CPUs above a certain performance threshold would perform equally. Not very good CPU benches!

And on that platform 1024x768 is just as unrealistic as 640x480 you would still see similar differences with no AA/AF.
