DVD Double Layer + and -

A friend needs a new burner after his gave up the will to live.

It seems the NEC 3500A is a popular and cheap model. on the ebuyer info it
has it listed as DVD+R DL 4x but no - (so i assumed there is no - DL yet)
But having a look at the samsung TS-H552B it says DVD-R DL 2.4x
The pioneer 108 didnt say about if its + or - DL

So are now + and - DL discs? are there any players which do both?

I think that's just a mistake to be honest, CDFreaks' test of the drive says it just does +R DLs at 2.4X- which is slow compared to the 4x that the NEC3500 is capable of. -R DL is coming some time next year, and it's possible (although not guaranteed by any means) that a firmware flash will enable it in current +R DL drives. In any case, +R DLs are likely to be the best choice for most people, since the ability to set the booktype to DVD-Rom increases the compatibility of the discs.
