So if i go into my BIOS and change my memory from 3-4-4-8 to 2.5-4-4-7 (just an example), what would this accomplish if I cant REALLY change the latencies of my actual memory?
The ram will respond faster and result in better performance... Now thats in layman terms!

What myth said is correct. I'd just add that SPD programming is there so the motherboard equipped with the capability to read the SPD info can set the timings correctly in the BIOS. Most motherboards allow you to defeat this as well and that's what you would be doing in your example if the modules were programmed to be 3-4-4-8 and you ran them at 2.5-4-4-7.

How do you like your XP-120? What fan are you using?

I like it right bad, my nizzle.

I'm using a Delta Focussed Flow 120mm on a Fan Contoller. Needed as without it, the fan is louder than a really loud thing.

Well yeah i know what reduced timings would get you... i guess im asking...if i set my 3-4-4-8 to 2.5-4-4-7, what kind of negative effects would show up on my system...(more heat output..more chnace of my system crashing mid game etc).Is there any reason to return my memory settings to 3-4-4-8?
And how low could i get my timings at standard DDR400 (the 3200)...and if i bumped it up to 215 (3400), would i be less likely to get the reduced timings i set?

Sorry about the questions, they are rough around the edges.

what i was confused about in my last post, i thought the memory was set at the SPD settings as the lowest it can go. So, the Low Latnecy memory (2-2-2-5) could go even lower?

That's a lot of questions. Perhaps you could limit your posts to one or two at a time.

Tighter timings usually mean better performance but not always. Again, go to the Corsair site and do some reading. The only adverse affect of tight timings can be instability if you run them lower than your sticks can run reliably, and this point is different for every stick. Also, sometimes adding more volts can increase performance by allowing RAM to run at higher speeds or tighter timings (or both), and sometimes not. Testing is the only way to know how low you can go with a particular memory/MBD/CPU combo. Yes bumping the MHz will eventually cause instability, but not always because of the RAM. Many things can limit a system's ability to achieve high overclocks. Low latency memory like the Corsair XL (and many others) can run tighter than 5-2-2-2 sometimes, but not always. Again you really need to play with your components to see what your setup is capable of.

Go to XtremeSystems.org and look at the many overclocking guides, especially those relating to the platforms you use most. There is a wealth of overclocking information there.

Well I always give people the benefit of the doubt. I don't care much what people think they are getting away with. I just have a good time and try to help.
