Do you mean after you have installed Ubuntu or before? If after you would just use GParted.

It depends if there is a filesystem installed on it (and whether the partition is part of a logical volume)

GPARTED will resize ext file systems, I'm not sure about NTFS.

After - GParted won't let me shrink the ubuntu partition for some reason, saying that it's already at its' minimum size.

sda3 and sda6 are part of the original windows OS partition that I split up into W10 and a shared date folder - both NTFS. sda4 is on ext4 with a key symbol next to it, 109GB in size with 5.98 used, and that's the one I'd like to shrink and merge the excess with sda6 (shared data).

Indeed, Gparted does handle NTFS though thankfully as have used it myself.

I don't think you can change the Ubuntu partition while its running, have you tried using a live cd to run gparted?

If it's relevant at all, after I launch GParted terminal is reporting a few error messages, all on the form of (gpartedbin:1978): glib-critical **: source id 69 was not found when attempting, where the id number varies throughout the 10-15 messages.

It's unlocked when I do that but giving me an error message about moving the start point of that partition meaning that it may not boot correctly. If it screws up it's just gonna set me back a couple of hours work so whatevs

Edited : Is there a reason for moving the beginning of the partition?

Re: Learning to clean install dualboot W10 & kodibuntu

The order of the partitions was such that, for me to be able to have just one shared data drive (that already existed) I'd have to move the beginning of the partition, but fortunately GParted was up to the challenge and your advice worked, thanks. Basically the only thing I can think of that I need to get sorted is Kodi which is not behaving itself. Oh and I'm struggling to implement this fix for my onboard wifi not working with linux: https://www.mail-archive.com/ath10k@.../msg03873.html all going way above my head, perhaps in a month or so.
