    Gaming Problems

    Hi,

This is my first post, I hope somebody can help. I recently built up my first PC. Spec as follows:

    > Asus K8N mobo
    > Athlon 64 3000 cpu
    > 2x 512mb pc3200 ram
    > XFX 128mb Nvidia 6600gt (agp)
    > 200gb maxtor ide hd.
    > 16x Sony +/- DVDRW
    > LG flatron 17" tft

My intentions were to create a system that could comfortbaly run Half Life 2. However, I have failed to get past the first cut scene. The computer freezes, and then the monitor switches off and goes into power saving mode (just like when the computer is powered off).

Having heard of the various bugs in HL2, I also tried different games such as NFSU2, but even at lowest graphics settings, I struggle to get much of a game before it crashes in a similar fashion.

Pleeeease help, it's driving me crazy...

What PSU have you got running all this as the 6600/6800 range needs a good PSU unit to get the power it requires to function.

From what you've said above it does sound more like a power issue than anything else really.

Does the computer only crash when you play games? Can you run other Windows apps without the computer craching? It really could be anything - power, memory, temperature issues (heatsinks not fitted properly), driver issues.

When you reboot does Windows tell you that the computer was not shut down properly?

When it crashes is the Num Lock light still functioning on the keyboard or is the actual power switched off?

It's okay, I've sorted it now. The lead from my psu to my gpu wasn't connected properly . It's great now, I'm getting 96fps on CS source at 1024x768 high detail everything with trilinear and 2x aa.

Thanks anyway for your help, it was indeed a power issue.
