Sound - best for gaming?

Well I'm currently running a Fourtissimo and have been for about 4 years, ahum.

Whats a good card for gaming audio, plenty of channels with low cpu overheads would be a good start.

I take it the Audigy range is a good start but really havn't been looking into sound for about a year so I'm a little behind.

the philips acoustic edge is the best card for playing older games, as its stere -> 5.1 conversion is second to none.

nvidia's soundstorm tech, as used on nforce2 boards, allows dolby digital encoding, which is great if you have decent speakers & a decoder.

other than that, look at a hercules of some sort for gaming, or a terratec/m-audio for music.

is my dislike for creative showing through yet?

dont bother with audididy, just get a new mobo (nf7-s

) which is just as good if not better for sound quality imo
( i also dislike creative)

I was tempted, nice mobo... but the Gigabyte GA-7NNXP had my eye over the Abit.

THX certification is for speakers more than for sound cards. As it stands, THX just means "loud & pretty distortion free".

I'm thinking just get an Abit NF7-S because its got plenty of features including excellent onboard sound.

I used a fortissimo III for a while before I switched to using onboard 8rda+... I get weird popping sounds when I turn my volume up too high on my pc

it doesn't go funny when I turn the sound down on volume control and just bump speakers up though
I like the onboard sound but preferred having a sound card

The sound on the NF7-S is really quite alot nicer than things like the Live! 5.1 cards. Although... I do like my Creative 5300 speakers. They were on offer at scan.co.uk a few months ago, and I was looking for a cheap 5.1 speaker set. Seriously can't fault them

Yes but anything thx certfied is likely to be a good product. The classification carries a lot of clout- deserved it is

What about the new Audigy 2 ZS? Whats so different about it than say the Audigy 2 Platinum EX or whatever anyone know?
