Re: Is VR going to be like 3D TV
I've had a very limited use of VR and 3D. I feel 3D isn't used by movie makers in a massively impressive way from what I've seen, a few mountains in a different distances isn't impressive. It is nice though.
I really feel the next big thing will be holographic experience. I have a vision of sitting on my couch and its as if I'm sitting in the middle of the race track on an F1 circuit with the cars racing by me, the scene will then change to the next corner and as they race around I can follow them, corner by corner. No wearable equipment.

One big difference is cost.
I don't know a single person that "upgraded" to a 3D tv. In all cases (including myself) there was going to be a TV purchase anyway so it came down to do I get 3D or not. In my case it was something like another £40, about 10% added to the cost of a basic smart TV. I have used the feature and enjoy it, seems a shame to me that things like Netflix don't support it.
Getting VR will mean a new graphics card (perhaps within a year I will have a Vega but right now what I have isn't good enough) as well as the headset. Not gonna happen any time soon.

Which is pretty much how it's supposed to be done - Immersion without intrusion. For the most part, I'd say you'd only notice it at the start as it's beyond what you might expect to see, but once you're used to the experience it would fade into the background of your awareness.

That is true - I did some training on various simulators in the past, and the experience was so real that you came out to be genuinely surprised to find out that it was just a room on hydraulic struts!
Re: Is VR going to be like 3D TV
I have a 3D TV and a PSVR and think they both can offer great experiences; and I can see why they are not for everyone. Both can require a lot of fiddling and patience to find a "sweet spot" or to find something actually worth spending time on. Certain experiences will show these technologies at their best, the problem is, is that there is far more mediocre content than the mind blowing stuff, I think this also depends on where your expectations lie.
As a great example which I enjoyed having my 3D TV for, was watching Prometheus, the scene where the foreign body was removed from the female protagonist by a robot "MediDoc", this was really effective on my hardware. It was like watching it through a window.
I also think there a few great experiences on the PSVR, apart from Resi 7 all of these are perhaps too short more than anything. I do think there are a lot of naysayers out there who haven't even tried VR yet though, for me its all about trying something new and letting your imagination run with what the game developers are trying to do.
The free X-Wing fighter experience on PSVR for example; it will not look as great as something similar on Vive or Oculus, but as soon as you are "in the cockpit" you instantly realise the draw and potential of VR and most importantly I defy anyone to say that it isnt a lot of fun.
Re: Is VR going to be like 3D TV
For me VR is the future of gaming and many software applications. I don't think there is any escaping this. I think its just hard to see at the moment as VR is too expensive for the masses. VR is a truly amazing experience. It is the natural evolution for PC / Gaming etc interaction. As for Holographics - this wont happen. VR owns the field. Holographics is pointless, Back To The Future vision of the future. It provides less immersion than a 3D TV.
