For a basic mouse mat these are superb. Proper rubber base (not foam) and ~ 3mm high.

That's one I have. No complaints but I did recently spill red wine over it, so it doesn't look the best now!
I did go through a period of using a piece of cardboard with an A4 print out of a special "noise" pattern taped over it but unsuprisingly it wears out fairly quickly.
Of course I use a mouse mat.
A Steelseries one I won as part of a competition somewhere, sometime.

I use the mouse mat like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gel-Mouse-M.../dp/B0013DIDPW, but my mam dislike this and always move mouse to the deck.
I have a glass desk so I can't not use a mat.

I still find I need a mouse mat. I got a tiny little ozone one that's only about 8 inches by 6. Before that I had a big Corsair the length of the desk, but found I prefer the keyboard on a hard surface.
A couple of days with my new Steelseries mini mouse mat and it's definitely better than using the desk surface.
I'm not using one atm, I did with my old desk, I used a baking tray on a nonslip mat.

I always use a mouse mat, I didn't really people have stopped doing it as much! I just feel it protects both the mouse, and my desk
I have noticed in places I have worked not many use a mouse mat and instead just use the desk.
Personally I can't stand the roughness of using a mouse on a typical desk. I like to use rubbery mats with the textured cloth surface.
