Basically my 480GB one,a mates 480GB one, someone I knew on a forum who had two 960GB models, and a relative who had two Ultra II models, had them fail or have an issue. All around one to two years old.

It could be a faulty batch, but looking online(and even people who had failed 480GB/960GB ones on here) it seems they have "sudden kaput" syndrome, where everything looks pefectly fine and the next time you boot up it just stops working. A mate who bought a 480GB at the same time as me,but rarely switches the PC off, still has a working drive.

Why it pissed me off soo much,is I had a hyper modded FO4 playthrough and had not backed up all the mods and saves fully to a secondary drive. Since one or two of the mods were removed from NMM by their authors it nearly wiped out a playthrough a few 100 hours long.

Hence,I refuse to touch an Ultra II drive, and will only get another Sandisk if I am certain it does not have this boot-up issue.

OFC,some other forum members had no issues, but I can only really go by my own experiences!!

OTH,the Crucial drives seem to be fine, and I have a Kingston SSD I won on Hexus in 2012 which still works fine now.

Hence I wouldn't go too low end for a drive,if its a few quid difference.

However, some of the Chinese 360GB drives are under £70 if you want a cheapo drive, but I cannot promise how reliable they are.

Re: SSD prices seem to be dropping now

Maybe I'll steer clear of the sandisk ones. That said, I think I've got a 460GB one in my server to host OS VMDKs (keep the metal span down as much as possible). Touch wood it's ok. I had a lot of problems with it, but turned out that was the SATA drived in ESXi being kippered and not the drive.

Again, touching as much wood as possible, I haven't had a SSD fail on me (yet). I've got Samsungs in my desktops and laptops, but have another Kingston drive in my server that is quite old now and that has been happy as larry.

Did I say touch wood? I should touch some wood.

Seems like Samsung dropped output this month due to a power outage which doesn't bode well for prices. Fingers crossed that there will be a significant reduction in cost over this year.

Black Friday pricing by any chance? The Sandisk wasn't one with the dodgy Sandforce controller was it? Mind you I have an OCZ drive with that controller in it still going strong in a laptop, probably using up all my luck

I mean there are some here(even DR) who said their examples were fine, and maybe newer ones are fixed, but in the end if you see so many failures of the Ultra II its not really reassuring!!

Yep on Black Friday. Its a Marvel controller, and my Sandforce based Kingston HyperX 3K drive still works fine after nearly 6 years!!

It seems the failure mode is very similar - the drives are perfectly fine under Windows, and all utilities look fine. Then,"bam" you reboot it and its died.

A Sandforce based Corsair drive that did that actually came back from dead with a firmware update, I was lucky. It is still going strong as 24/7 Minecraft server storage. The later firmware did seem to help a lot.

Edit: Typing that I just realised how many SSDs we seem to have kicking around the house now, never really twigged that the hard drives have been dying off and getting quietly replaced.

I tried reviving it but no luck.

My crucial drive is still working after 4 years, but has lost a bit of capacity - looks like the wear levelling ran out of spare cells

Good job I stopped checking the price so closely after I bought mine then!

Well I regret in 2016 not getting a 750GB MX300 for £110 to £120,but TBH outside a few games,I don't really need another SSD although it would be nice!!

BTW,this is the cheap Chinese 360GB SSD I was talking about:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/360GB-KingS.../dp/B076WX8JPH

It was on offer for £58 a few weeks ago. OFC,I cannot vouch for reliability.

    Edit!!

BTW,Samsung had an accident at its NAND fab,so suspect another excuse to up prices!

I keep doing something similar - I think about buying a new SSD for *something* then realising I've already got one in the spares box that'll do the job....

Mee too. I remember that one. I couldn't find an excuse at the time. Right now I do have a use but can't justify the extra cost.
