I went around to a mates house to help him build a new PC yesterday. He is using an Abit KV8 mobo and has 1 HDD and 1 CD combo drive. When the HDD in master on IDE1 and the CD drive is slave on IDE, everything works fine. However, we want te HDD on IDE1 and the CD on IDE2. But when we have it this way the CD drive is not regognised and does not show up as being connected, even in the BIOS. We have tried all slave/master jumper settings and different cables with no joy.
Not only will the CD drive not work on IDE2, but it wont even open when the eject button is pressed. But if the IDE cable is removed, leaving just the power plugged in, it will open.
I have not built a system with just two IDE devices for years, normally i have at least 2 optical drives. So whats going on here - if you only have 2 IDE devices, must they both be on IDE1 to work? must IDE1 be full before IDE2 can be used?
