Re: Who's buying a GeForce RTX then?

I can buy one (2080ti) via the business so it's 20% off the top - still not great - but i'm looking to move off a 1080 so i'd expect a reasonable speed bump. Different if I had the 1080ti of course.

I'm umming and ahhing a fair bit but I have a preorder in - which I cancel of course once benches appear and say dreadful things. Or not.

Re: Who's buying a GeForce RTX then?

I'd love to upgrade, but only to a 10-series. In the past, the new series have come in at a "reasonable" premium price. This time though they've created a new price bracket that's almost double the previous one, meaning they can still charge full whack for the previous gen. The only reason I'd upgrade is to run it through as a business expense, but even then the price is just daft.

Re: Who's buying a GeForce RTX then?

At the start of this year I sold off my 980 Ti SLI and downsized to a mini ITX build with a 1080 Ti.

It doesn't look like I'll be upgrading again in such a short amount of time at the current prices on new hardware. I'd maybe like an I9 9900k, but it depends on the price as well and how much I'd get back for my 8700k.

Re: Who's buying a GeForce RTX then?

I'm still stuck on GTX 970, but I'm done with nVidia, their shenanigans over the last 2 years has turned me off them completely. And my reason for going with nVidia for the last 3 GPU purchases (Linux support) is long gone since AMD has completely turned around around support for the Linux driver stack, going from God awful completely propitiatory garbage, to being practically complete out of the box mainline kernel support with as little as possible blobbed away. It's only a matter of which AMD card I go for this time, rather than if. Anticipating Navi is the only thing that's making me hold off for now, since there's a lot of uncertainty around that atm.

Re: Who's buying a GeForce RTX then?

Ordered the 2080ti. Was considering the 1080ti all this time from a 1070, wanted to wait for these. Price/performance ratio hasn't changed at the 1080ti price point so gone for the 2080ti. The performance on it should hopefully stand up for a couple of years at 3440x1440.

Out of interest, why did you decide to order now and not wait until the prices settle a bit later down the line?

The stock orderer at Overclockers UK (large UK PC tech retailer) said he expects the price to go up in the short term (in the UK).
I want the best, and I want it now. And NVIDIA have a 30 day return period if the benchmarks turn out to be disappointing. I have mine secured for first batch in September.
If I hadn't got in now for the FE I probably wouldn't get it until November and then people are thinking about Christmas. I fear my 1080ti would probably sell for less November to end of January. And I don't want to wait for November for new, shiny.

Just to secure availability while I truly decide. I can always cancel if I need to do that but the initial leaks show performance is as expected for it (after you move past the initial shock for price/performance). I knew stock would be low initially and in reality I'd probably end up waiting months to buy it at the same price.

Yup, no real risk with preorder - no money has gone anywhere and I'm covered by legislation so I can even return it when it's shipped to me.

From where I pre-ordered money has already been taken, though it's simple enough to get it back. And yeah there is always the unopened returns if the benchmarks come out while it's being shipped.
