    Angry SN95G5 Power Problems *URGENT*

I'm helping a friend fix his SN95G5, his specs are
    SN95G5
    AMD 64 3500+ @ 2.2 ghz
    1024 MB Mushkin 3200
    ATI x800 Pro 256mb
    200 GB Western Digital @ 7200 rpm
    Windows XP Professional SP2

the problem with his computer is that before everything would work fine and now all of the sudden when he turns on his computer the ICE fan is very very very loud and runs at 100%, we think this is causing the computer to shut down due to power, but then again we heard that shuttles handle power struggles very well even with their low psu's. the computer will sometimes load into windows xp but then the computer will shut off again a few minutes after use, after rebooting this the computer will then turn off sometimes even at the bios screens. to be able to go into windows again we leave the shuttle off for a little bit then turn it on again. the longer we wait the longer it stays up... this is very frustrating considering it is a relatively new shuttle that was purchased only 2 months ago.

to sum it up: the computer keeps shutting turning off all of the sudden in both windows xp, bios loading, and the bios menu. the ICE fan is running at 100% when the shuttle starts, and the computer can't stay on in windows for more than a couple minutes, which means no using these programs that controls the fans. the bios menu for controlling fans isn't working either... please help this is really annoying.

sounds like a overheating problem to me, try reseating the heatsink/cleaning off and reapplying thermal paste, iirc on 1st boot fan will go to 100% till bios is loaded then throttle down if set, according to the temps.

I agree......it certainly sounds like your cpu is overheating, which is why the fan is staying at 100% speed.

The SN95 boots up with the fan at full speed every time, but then slows to whatever setting is chosen in the BIOS (unless it's set to 1005 obviously). But all these settings get overridden if the cpu gets too hot, so that you don't damage the core......and as all the AMD64's have temp protection, then it will shutdown randomly whenever it hits the peak.

So, do as DForsaken suggested, and you should find that your problems will vanish.
