Hey guys. I baught a AMD Athlon 2400xp a few months ago and I am just wondering, is it worth changing it to a 2500xp? Will it increase its performance?

    Says who?
XP2400's are very good overclockers in the right set ups.

    catattack,
If you are just going to run stock I wouldn't bother .
Also, which mobo have you got?

Yea, i'm gona run stock. But I though that going from a 266mhz to a 333mhz FSB would increase performance?

catattack, they are given the xp rating for a reason, while i think it's a poor naming convention, it stands true that an xp2500+ is not much faster than an xp2400+, while it has more cache and a higher fsb it runs at a lower speed, so you will negligible if any difference between the two, it definately isn't worth the extra money!

    catattack,

    Your XP2400 is unlocked (it's a T'bred "B" afterall ) & you've got 1 of, if not the best, overclocking mobos around.

You know what's coming next, don't you?

Drop the multiplier & up the fsb!

Precisely! All TbredB (even lowly XP1700+) should get between 2.1ghz and 2.2ghz and run happily at 400FSB never mind 333FSB, drop the multiplier first obviously and be sure your RAM is PC2700 (333FSB) or PC3200 (400FSB) and always in sync (ratio 1:1, 4:4 etc).

Basically at stock the XP2400+ (TbredB 2.0ghz 266FSB) will be practically identical to the XP2500+ (Barton 1.8ghz 333FSB), the boost from double L2 cache and increased FSB are already taken into account in the 'XP rating', Bartons are usually alittle over flattered too.

Anyway there is still good demand for XP2400+ as it's about as fast as many mobos can handle (266FSB limitiation), you may get a very good price for it. XP2500+ are £70ish though and although they are also ALWAYS unlocked you again tend to get 2.1-2.2ghz average (XP3200+) so with the 5% boost from double L2 you'd be as fast as a TbredB at 2.2-2.3ghz ... worth paying the extra?
