    p4 2.8 800fsb retail running very hot?

Hey guys. i had some advice previous about my problem i think my cpu is having in terms of heat.

    Iv got a p4 2.8 800mhz retail

out the box 2.8. i have not modified a thing. its running at a very hot temp as far as im concerned as my athlon used to run cooler.

    Idle: 45-50°
    Load: 70°+

using winbond when playing games to see if it goes over the default warning limit of 70° goes well over beeps numerous times.

I was using the retail fan which came with my cpu (bought from Aria Tech')
Was running even a little hotter than it is now.
im now using a retail 3.06 fan with copper base.

with the temps above also below screen of idle temps:

Do you guys thing this is acceptable temps for this? personally i dont think so as the limit is about 75-80° for system cut out isnt it with p4? correct me if im wrong.

    couple more points.

im using artec silver (nice thin layer)
one thing i could maybe see is my quite small case. its a standard size enermax tower. but i have 3 in fans and 3 out fans
(2 at front, 1 at bottom, 1 at top, 2 at back) i would of thought thats enough airflow?

    any solutions/suggestions?

    Much appreciated

    Rob

Onboard sensors are approximate only, if you're running too hot you'll get restarts, crashes etc ... if you're stable don't worry. Try something like Prime95 tortue test and bring up your monitor to keep an eye on temps (ideally CPU usage too) ... don't multi-task.

If you are running too hot then you need to check the cooling. CPU HSF is obvious but also consider compound and things such as incase airflow and ventilation ... even something simple like a mis-placed or mis-directed fan can make things very sweaty. Finally do expect your CPU to run hot ... and be thankful you don't have one of those P4 3.4ghz CPU's which it would seem can heat your whole home LOL!

There's no substitute for the good old "finger test".

Take one chubby pinky and place near base of heatsink with the PC running hard. It should ideally be cool to the touch, at worst it should be slightly warm (skin temperature). Any hotter than that and it's trying to tell you something.

So if the finger says cool (all sides of the heatsink near the base) and the monitor still says hot, then I'd believe the finger.

    Cheers,

    MM
