I need a new *reliable* mouse

I've been extremely disappointed with my last two mice, both were expensive (£80+) and supposedly high quality products by Logitech and Corsair, but both developed LMB faults after just over a year of owning them.

Having a look around, both mice still get very good reviews, so maybe I've just been extremely unlucky, or maybe I am an extreme user who pushed these mice too far. To be fair, this last year I have not been working due to health issues so usage of my home PC has been higher than normal anyway (like ~12 hours per day rather then ~6), but still, I would expect such high price peripherals to last longer.

These mice were the Logitech G502 Proteus Core and the Corsair M65 ELITE. Both mice were fantastic to use and appeared to be great quality, but as I said, the LMB failed on both mice in just over a year of use.

I'm unemployed, so paying ~£80 for another mouse is out of the question, but I do need one that is reliable, and if possible, has more buttons than just left, right and middle. I don't care for RGB so none of that nonsense is needed.

I have also owned two Corsair mechanical keyboards, the Strafe and the K68, the Strafe failed after about a year (the 6, Y, H and N keys wouldn't light up or work) and my current K68 has developed a fault where it sometimes enters double letters. This has led me to believe Corsair just produce fancy looking cheap quality items so I do not wish to buy from them again.

Any ideas what's good, and possibly reasonably priced too?

Avoid fancy gimicky gaming/tunable mice. Go for a classic mx518 or similar.

I loved my old MX518, I'll see if I can find one. You're right about these fancy mice, too expensive and too unreliable. My MX518 lasted YEARS!

    Logitech G700S
    Roccat Kova+
    Coolermaster Storm Inferno
    Logitech G19 keyboard.

I've had each of these since the day they were released. All three are absolutely perfect, as good as the day of unboxing, and the top two have been in constant heavy use 7 days a week (Roccat at work, Logi at home) from the outset.
Not even the slightest hint of failure.

Not sure what you're doing to break so many of these things, but I would heartily recommend any of the above. They're probably quite cheap nowadays, too, but have certainly held up to accidental encounters with dogs and furniture, and even a few ragey moments!

Re: I need a new *reliable* mouse

Logitech and some other companies have shifted to using cheaper Chinese Omron switches(not the Japanese Omron switches),and the metal bits inside start to deform. There are guides on the internet on how to bend the bits back into shape,or basically to replace the old switches with newer ones. So I suspect a lot of newer Logitech mice might have this problem. I would also avoid any of the Logitech mechanical keyboards which use the Romer G switches as they also have problems too.

I still have a recabled G500s which still works to this day,so the old Logitech mice lasted for years!

still running two Logitech MX518s one a decade old. Every now and then give the rubber a wipe down but otherwises it's fine. They released a G400 a few years ago that was the successor to the MX518. Have it boxed in the loft waiting as a replacement.

Re: I need a new *reliable* mouse

Some of the older G5/G500 series mice did have a design flaw, where the cables were not properly connected to the PCBs,and would cause connection problems. I went through two G5 and one G500 mice which had the problem. I RMAed the last two,and in the end replaced the cable on the G500 which has been so far fine.

Logitech G400s. Bought April 2014, used constantly since - 6h+ every day. Previously had an MX518 but can't remember why I replaced it.

Use a nice mouse mat also - I've always used a fabric Allsop mat. And ensure the cable is as free as possible to minimise flex during regular use.

Does the new MX518 (listed here) have the better Omron switches do you know? Trying to find out through Google but can't tell.

I think they maybe Chinese Omron switches(the Romer G are also derivatives of the same switches):
    https://www.overclock.net/forum/375-...sensor-47.html

Apparently the Chinese Omrons which are used in the MX518 Legendary seem to double click less, but I can't confirm if that is true.

However,I would try and talk to Logitech and get a new replacement mouse first. Their RMA is usually pretty decent, and if you point to posts on Reddit, etc talking about the problem that should help you. Like I said you can always try resoldering some new switches if you feel confident with soldering:
    https://www.maketecheasier.com/repla...ouse-switches/

That article does mention Zowie and from what I gather they seem to use different switches. So it might be worth investigating them, but I have no experience with their mice.

I have a G5, three G500 and a G500S. I like the 5 series. Not had an issue with any of them other than a damaged cable - got trapped in a cabinet door and split the braiding and insulation, which frayed like a biatch in no time at all.

Violence and Lubrication is the solution to fixing everything, if it still doesn't work, you need more lubrication.

Sadly most companies only provide a 1 year warranty. Plus it's a lot of hassle, going to a Post Office (not easy with my limited mobility) and cost of sending, etc. Just easier to buy a replacement.

Re: I need a new *reliable* mouse

when you say left mouse problems. is that double clicking or you press left click but it acts as right click.? or both?
my g402 did that earlier in the year. its a couple of years old or so.

decided to take it apart and see what its like inside. had to carefully prise the pads off the bottom to get to the screws.
turned out there was some gunk that had worked its way under the scroll wheel and a hair or 2 had wedged into the microswitch. cleaned it off, it instantly fixed it (i was cleaning it while PC was on )

the scroll wheel is attached with a tiny spring, which might ping out if your not careful, then you'll need to spend half an hour looking around the room for it.

    been fine since.

maybe worth a check if warranty replacement request doesn't work out.

Sometimes it doesn't register a click, sometimes it doubles clicks. I just checked though and Corsair provide a 2 year warranty on mice, perhaps I'll give them a shout.

The cable failing is a well known problem,so much so repair kits exist for them. Basically the USB connection wire fails on the part plugged into the PCB,as it flexes over time, the cable frays and the connection becomes loose.

The cable connections on both my G5s went at similar times, and so did the G500. It also happened to some other people I knew, and the repair even has been documented on ifixit:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Logitec...lacement/43373

Most G500/G5 mice which fail, fail because of that.

Logitech probably was aware of the problem,as they replaced both G5 mice out of warranty. If you look at later Logitech mice, such as my G502 Hero, there is a rubber housing surrounding the cable entry point into the mouse.

You can see the design change in the MX518 Legendary.

Look at the rubber housing around the cable on the newer one.

Logitech will probably replace it out of warranty. They did so with my G5 mice, after I showed them evidence of the problem and the fact I had been a longterm customer, and was dissapointed(which I was).

Also, failing that you can try this repair:
    https://www.instructables.com/id/Rep...click-problem/

You can see the part I was telling you about,it deforms so you need to bend it back into place.
