I've had one 30GB IBM, which still just about works after 4 years, but only on its side, and you have to shake it a bit before it'll load windows. I had an 80GB WD caviar which completely died on me within a couple of months. It's still in warranty, but I've yet to get round to RMAing it because I've got to send it to Germany.
That leaves Maxtor; an 80GB in my brother's comp for 2 1/2 years, and a 200GB Diamondmax 10 in this machine for about 3 months which is quiet and fast enough (TBH never really can tell any appreciable difference between different drives speed wise). Since they seem reliable and cheap I'll probably be sticking with them in future.
But then u do get that other high pitched whining sound that no one else can, but it wont go away!Originally Posted by Timmy!!!

I've just bought my first Seagate, first impressions are ok....its not very nice to look at but, its a HD so i forgive it
Not as quiet as the samsungs, also makes this strange series of sounds every 5mins or so...
I vote Samsung, I have 2, both exceptionally quiet, well designed, have been reliable so far. Perfect
I love my 200gb pata seagate 7200.7, it's ridiculously quiet but I had a bad experience with their sata drives last summer. Bought a 120gb sata model which failed, the replacement failed and then i stumped up the extra for the 160gb model as I seemed to be jinxed with the 120gb model. Unfortunately all the sata models sounded like a morse code machine when accessing. Put that in another machine for someone who didn't mind the noise in the end and replaced it with a 120gb sata wd drive. That's been nice and quiet and with the fdb doesn't seem to have developed the trademark wd whine that afflicts my old 80gb wd drive. That is now in an external enclosure purely for backup purposes.
Strangely my bad experience with seagates occured just after they had announced their 5 year warranty.
lol yea good point, I didn't think about that. I have ended up selling that hard drive, whining was driving me nuts (but no-one else could hear it at all ).Originally Posted by nvening
Currently have a SATA Maxtor in my gaming rig, its ok, found the Hitachi disks good here at work. want me some raptors though.
I just love my 74Gb WD Raptor, because it's faster than any SATA hdd!
I also like Maxtor, never had any trouble with my 120Gb SATA and 40Gb hdd's.
My Rig: 'Hellcat'
Asus M3A78-T
AMD Phenom II 720 @stock (for now)
2x2Gb Corsair XMS2 PC8500 c5
Maxtor 250Gb SataII, 6V250F0
Nvidia Geforce 7950GT
Pioneer DVR 110D (black)
Akasa Eclipse 62 + window panel
Corsair VX450w psu
AG Neovo HW22 tft panel
Creative P5800 5.1 surround system
Seagate seem to win everything at the mo, so they r my choice.

I've had one of each fail, so no preference. I did have a string of bad Conner 40MB drives though, glad they have gone.
I voted Maxtor. They were one of the first with FDB and I've bought them ever since. Maxtor also provide an acoustic management tool, which allows configuring the acoustics so that it's virtually silent, even during seeks, unlike one disk manufacturer who doesn't provide such a tool, I think it might have been Seagate.
Except it isn't by a long shot.Originally Posted by trashcanmonkey
I voted Maxtor, purely because I have two maxtors 1 couple months old and one, 1 year and a half.. And have had No problems what so ever. Also they are very reasonably priced per Gig (although must are now!)..
Seagate all the way, have a SCSI Cheetah 73G and a SATA Barracuda 80G running atm with no probs. Still got a Seagate Medalist 8Gig & 2 SCSI barracuda 9Gig sitting in a drawer, still working. Never had a Seagate failure. In contrast I just sent back a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 to manufacturer for replacement. Dont get me started on IBM.
Western Digital because they are local and have a fantastic return policy. Also, the Raptors are great performance drives and the JB series are reasonably fast and reliable without excessive noise. I am a big fan of Seagate also however.
