Hmmm, five years ago eey, well for me that was:
    PII 300Mhz @350 (how's that for OCing )
64MB SDram (costed me 150€ back in the days)
Riva TNT2 Ultra (costed me 350€ back then >_<)
SB some lousy stereo sound card...

Then 4 years ago, bought myself a portable@
1GHz with a 8MB video card (boy was that a mistake, didn't know anything about that back then).
This baby costed me 2500€ and I busted it up in a month, no warranty (T_T)

    Then I bought myself an AMD 1800+ with a Geforce3 TI200 (also 350€) with 256DDR.

Upgraded to a 2600+ with 512DDR and a HIS Excalibur 9800IceQ pro somewhere last year.
This one broke down on me last week, sniffle.

Now I'm getting a shuttle, with a AMD 64 3500+ Venice, with 1GB Dual channel DDR, 2x250 GB Sata/150 in striping raid and my beloved 9800pro in there.

Hmmm, how times do change, I love it , my wallet however does not.

    /EDIT

Blimey, that took some thinking, especially as that was my student days. Must admit I don't remember too many of them!

Anyway, for the first half of the year I had a PII-350 OC'ed to 434MHz (FSB=124MHz). Perfectly stable, in fact it became UNSTABLE when I clocked it back to normal speeds!!! Anyway, full rig was:
    PII-350 OC 434
    128MB RAM
    32MB Voodoo3 3000
    20GB HDD
    1 x DVD ROM Drive
    1 x SCSI 2x2x6x CD-RW Drive (Old Yamaha 4x2x16x had died earlier)
    Sound Blaster Live!
    17" CRT Monitor

I worked all summer and as well as being able to get myself to Hong Kong for the following summer (Best holiday ever!), I got meself a kick-ass rig:
AMD Thunderbird 900MHz (Couldn'y quite afford the 1GHz)
256MB RAM (Salvaged old 128MB stick)
    64MB GeForce 2 Pro
    20GB HDD (Salvaged old one)
    40GB HDD
    1x DVD ROM Drive
    1x 52x CD-ROM Drive
    1x 24x10x32x CD-RW Drive
    Sound Blaster Live!
    17" CRT Monitor (Old one)

If I remember rightly, the old bits, where not in the new PC, went in my brothers direction.

And my 'new' machine (Now over 18 months old, and an upgrade of the above) is:
    P4C 3Ghz OC 3.3GHz
    1024MB RAM
    128MB Radeon 9800 Pro
    2x 160GB RAID0
    1x 80GB
    1x 300GB
    1x DVD ROM Drive
    1x DVD±RW Drive
    1x Samsung 710T (17" LCD)
    Sound Blaster Audigy 2

The hard disk space has been needed ever since I got meself broadband. Damn the ability to download so fast!!!!

What's even more worrying is the fact when I think back to my first PC, a 286 12MHz, CGA Screen, 640K RAM and 16MB HDD!!!!!!!
If the Earth is a sphere how do you travel to the ends of it?

Thanks, but you should see some of the prices I paid for items...

For example I paid nearly 400 pounds for a DVD-Writer alone at one point.

    I must be crazy

Hmmm - If I recall correctly Lee (and I think I do) I bought that PC for you and it cost just over £1400.00 ........

Also the DVD writer was £418 and was the Pioneer 103 (Before any one asks I blew up his old motherboard and CPU therefore decided to buy him a new rig as I am a nice guy really)

    Hmm, as I recall:

    P3 667 (o/c to 750)
    1 GB PC133 RAM
GF2 GTS (cost a small fortune)
18GB 15k RPM SCSI disk (another small fortune)
    18" TFT (large fortune)
    SB live value

    Think that's about right.
