    BUMP!

Sorry to resurrect this, but it seems more prudent than starting a new thread.

What's the word on the quietest HDD now, seeing as this thread is rather old indeed.

Re: The quest for the quiet hard drive.

lol I think you would have got away with starting a new one

Personally I think it's the western Digital AAKS series. Lovely and quiet.. can't hear it at all in my P182 and only very slightly in the Silverstone TJ-08.

SilentPCReview seemed to love them when I was looking to buy and their standards are higher than anyones

Some would say it's the samsung spinpoints though which I have no real experience with.

No complaints from my Samsung HD321KJ - a very quiet drive. Unless you have two competing drives side by side, it's impossible to tell.

I agree with staffsMike though, head on over to SilentPCReview as those guys take silence to a whole new level

Re: The quest for the quiet hard drive.

i've got two samsung spinpoints, gotta say they are pretty quiet. Have got rubber grommets because I've got an antec case, but still they're quiet enough for me to not notice they're even working. Not sure if the grommets make a huge diff tho. I've got a raptor as well, even tho its quieter than what I expected it to be I can still hear it by quite a bit even with the grommets installed.

Before this build I had a wd 120gb which was really loud.... but prob not the best comparison as I've heard that pretty much all the new drives are pretty quiet.

Thanks guys, I'll check them out.
I've got the silence bug - just got my new corsair PSU and case and now I can hear the HDDs over everything else
The case came with 2 akasa fans and they are pretty loud, are sharkoon golf ball 1000s enough or should i go with the 2000s?

1000's are good for case fans Shift enough to be useful.. especially as exhaust fans

I run a couple of samsungs in a RAID - can't hear any noise from them - extremely quiet.

Re: The quest for the quiet hard drive.

While we're on the topic of hard drive silence... anyone want to post a couple of pics of their suspended hard drives?

I'm looking to do this in an Antec NSK4000 as the hard drive is currently the loudest bit of my setup, and I want to make a bit of room for a 120mm intake fan.

    Cheers,

    Chimp

I mounted my HD on this :-
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
and now it's totally silent. Also I changed my case fans to the Sharkoon 1000 LED fans and they are very quiet and shift the air.
    Cave canem!

May have to get one if it works like you say it does.
I was looking at suspending but this would be better as I have to move my computer from home to uni.
It's mainly the seeking noise that bugs me, does it silence this?

I've got an 80mm Sharkoon (bought a 2000 model and had to lower the voltage to 1000 speed as it was pretty loud) which is what I want to upgrade to a 120mm.

Re: The quest for the quiet hard drive.

I've always found that Seagates tend to run a bit hotter than other drives. But the 5 year warranty is a good argument. If quiet was the main issue then you'd get a Green WD.

Re: The quest for the quiet hard drive.

IMHO the 5 year warranty is a bit of a gimmick. Drives are cheap as chips anyway - the warranty doesn't cover the value of the data, which is immeasurably more valuable and irreplaceable than the disk itself. (Of course you do back it up so it isn't so much of an issue.... don't you )

Samsung drives have a 3 year warranty - but by the time that is expired, the drive will probably have been replaced by something bigger anyway. I'm bot knocking the 5 year warranty, but it isn't the be all and end all.

(But the subject of disk drives can become almost a religious fervour - some swear by their WD Raptors, others would cross the road if you were carrying a Maxtor - and I'm just as bad - I used to be a Hitachi acolyte - now I belong to the Samsung club! But at the end of the day, they all pretty much do as they say, and to get back on topic, tghe posts here tend to favour Samsung and Seagate as quiet drives - with a different 'signature tune' for the two)

    Exactly.....
How many people keep a HD for 5 years anyway.......certainly not in a main rig.

5 years time, these HD's will be obselete anyway and we will all be using solid state drives.
