Oh, and you should see the discs he's got connected up to it.
I believe the correct word is "legacy" :-)
I'm just glad that he's being so patient whilst I blunder through this. Cheers for all your help so far anyway!

You know, "everyone" on Hexus want the last bit of performance out of their machines (i.e. DDR600, CL1.5 ) so I would think you'll need the last bit of it.Originally Posted by Mike Fishcake

Mixing old and new technologies is ALWAYS a very bad idea. Your results will be less than desired to be sure. You need to either repair your old system with like hardware or get rid of it and get an X2. The lower end 800 series Intel dual cores are cheap but for most things they don't compete with the X2. There are a few things that they do well on (file decription and video editing mostly) but in most everyday apps and games the Intel dual cores fall short. By the time you consider the motherboard and memory they are not much (if any) cheaper than a 4200+.
I know this. I really, really know this. If it was me making the decision, I'd go for it. Unfortunately, the guy who it belongs to likes legacy technology and doesn't like throwing stuff away. The other problem is that it's under a warranty arrangement with us, so anything replaced has to be paid for by us, which is why I'm trying to keep the cost down. A totally new system would cost too much.Originally Posted by StormPC
Like I mentioned in my post above, performance is not an issue - i *know* the X2 is better, but we just need the cheapest dual core system possible, as the system is also used for testing different builds of the FreeBSD OS to test for compatibilty on dual core/dual CPU systems.
They are a lot cheaper than the X2s BTW, I worked out what I'd need. I'm not at work today, so I don't have my working out, but the X2 based system came to over £400, and the P4 D system came to just over £300, (even with the DDR2 RAM) if i remember correctly.
Please don't think I don't appreciate your help, I do appreciate all the info and effort you put into assisting me in this seemingly never-ending quest
If I can get him to ditch the PCI LAN card, I should be fine
On most recent boards the gigabit ethernet is either on board the southbridge or hooks into a PCI-Express lane- the Broadcom controller on the Gigabyte board I suggested is a PCI-E part, I checked because I didn't want to be suggesting some PCI-bound rubbish. He should actually get better throughput on the onboard LAN than with a card that's hobbled by being on the PCI bus.
Right.
The system is all together and working lovely with the above gigabyte mobo. Almost....
I now need 2 IDE HD - SATA port converters to plug 2 300GB IDE drives into the SATA controller. Ignoring the obvious criticisms and better way of doing this, basically he can't use the onboard RAID IDE for some reason.
So, which would be better... these:

or these?

Have a look around for people that have Abit NF7-S Mobos, they came with IDE-SATA adaptors, managed to get a load from builds at work. But I'm out.

The first Google hit for 'gigaraid' is a guy asking for FreeBSD drivers. That's probably why.Originally Posted by Mike Fishcake
Well the Abit ones are cheaper and if you read the Knowledge Base answers there's a guy who's using one with an Abit AA8 Duramax which uses the ICH6R. Unless Intel have somehow screwed up compatibility somehow in the ICH7R they *should* work. Google was singularly unhelpful when I tried to verify this however. So, which would be better... these:
Yeah... apparently there is a later version of FreeBSD that supports it, but it would mean upgradng all the others or something.Originally Posted by Rave
I had a quick scootch around myself, but i'll get them ordered and let you know how it goes. I'll be glad when this is sorted!!Originally Posted by Rave
