Over clocking nightmare

ok i have a Gigabyte 7n400 pro2 and a 2500 AMD


I set the FSB in my bios to 200Mhz and my system went crazy.. garbled screen.. didnt wanna startup.. it was all i could do to pray for it to boot up one time so i could go into the bios and change the FSB back to 166.... once my system finally booted up i chaneged everything back... and it appears to be ok. Could this be inferior board issue.. or 200FSB was just to much... what else could play a part in this problem. I didnt bother the voltage or anything else..just the FSB.


what could the problem be... how can i tell if i have a barton.. or are all AMD 2500 chips Bartons ??

What ram do you currently have pc2100, pc2700, p3200 or pc3500? All 2500+'s are bartons so you shouldn't need to worry.

dunno much about the board, but check:

NB cooling?
SB cooliong?
PCI/AGP ratio? can you fix it on that board?
CPU heat?
CPU/RAM ratio? can the ram handle it?
and all 2500+ chips are bartons as far as i know

Stylez: I have pc3200 ram... not sure what brand.. but it does register as dual channel... i had to exchange some memory i bought that didnt register.. from what i understand.. gigayte boards are picky about ram...

Gr44: And as far as heat goes.. it wouldnt even restart so it didnt get a chance to heat up. i didnt adjust the pci or ram ratio and i am not sure if the ram can handle it.. how would i know... this is so frustrating...

Mate maybe your ram might not be able to take the amount of fsb you threw at it. What make of memory are you using?

Also it could be your agp/pci ratio, if its out of sync it could cause problems. Don't know to what extent as i don't know much about it myself but could be a possibility.

i might go ahead and get some name brand ram... only i didnt change the FSB to the ram, unless changing the CPU FSB automatically changes everything

Probably just need to drop the multiplier, you should go from 11x166=1.8ghz (default) to 9x166=1.5ghz (to check 9x is set) and then 9x200=1.8ghz. Then go up half a multiplier at a time checking you're stable. Do ensure the RAM is set sync to FSB (eg 1:1, 3:3) and when you can't go any higher stably it's time to either drop back a little for the long term (and severely test it) or try a little more voltage (+0.05v at a time) to see if you can get decently faster IF and only if you are certain temps aren't the problem. Upping the voltage will seriously stress your part more and gives off a lot more heat.

How does one sync ram to fsb

Depends on the mobo. Many use a ratio so equal numbers each side mean both are running at the same speed (synced) so that's 1:1, 3:3 etc. Other mobos tend to refer to the RAM's speed rating so PC2100=266mhz, PC2700=333mhz and PC3200=400mhz. RAM like AMD FSB is DDR so 400mhz is actually 2x200mhz. So for 333FSB set the RAM speed to PC2700 etc. There are other notations but they're the usual ones.

i feel what your saying Austin, but my MOBO doesnt Allow me to ADJ Multiplier on my AMD 2500. does the Asus A7N8X-d board allow that... or do i have to do some chip modifying if bios doesnt support it?

No choice if his mobo lacks multiplier adjustment, of course XP2500+ with 11x isn't very limiting anyway ... if he lacks voltage support the stock 1.65v should be pretty decent too.

bluephi1914 the Asus does have multiplier adjustment, but many people do stick around 11x anyway so it may not be worth upgrading for that alone. You could mod the CPU but it really isn't remotely worth it.

I tell you what !!! i am gonna switch out my memory, then i am going to slowly increase the FSB... oh wait.. i can do that because the FSB jumps from 166mhz to 200mhz !! $%^&$#

In that case I will exchange my current memory for some name brand.. i think that place i bought mine from has Samsung, if that is any better?? ....and if that doesnt work.. come Saturday... this gigabyte board is HISTORY !!!!!! i will go with Asus... i have had nothing problems from the start with this board.

Have you tried the latest BIOS? Also pressing CTRL+F1 in the Gigabyte BIOS often brings up a 'Professional' menu which may help. Some Giga's still use dips on the mobo to choose FSB but there are usually fine controls in the BIOS. Eg you select 266FSB (2x133) and get the choice in the BIOS of o/c'ing between 266FSB and 330FSB (hopefully in small increments), to use 333FSB you select it and then use the BIOS to o/c between 333FSB and 398FSB.

Samsung is well knonw to be top notch, also consider Crucial who are excellent if all you need is RAM, free shipping and if you enter your mobo in can be guaranteed compatibility. I had a Gigabyte KT400 mobo, was VERY good in many respects, only downsides were due to the VIA chipset. Even so if you get too much hassle then try not to destroy the Giga mobo (I understand if you do) but sell it on or return it perhaps?

Tried reducing the memory timings (ie. CAS, tRP, tRAS, and tRC), or even running them at SPD? By running them at SPD, the memory tells the mb the 'optimal' (stable) settings it can take.

By tweaking my memory settings, I was able to run my PC2700 up to 212Mhz stable or 220Mhz, stable at a couple of benchmarks then conks out. ATM, they're at 11-2-2-2.5, 200Mhz.

EDIT: Have you also tried increasing your vDIMM to 2.7 or 2.8?

Also make sure the PCI/AGP is locked at 66Mhz.
