    Question XPC Problem

Hey guys I am new and saw your site on xpc's webiste and i need some major help!!
    I have a Shuttle xpc sb77g5
    p4 550
    1gig ram
    1 WD raptor 34
    and a temp radeon 8500

My shuttle has worked fine since i got it a few months ago, until now. My processor temp at idle is 80c. I am not overclocking, I have gone in the bios to make sure, i have reset the cmos, i have even underclocked it and still runs at 73-75c. Like i said it has been working fine until now. I have made no changes that i know of to the bios to make it do this I dont know how it happened. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! Thank you

Try reseating the ICE cooler, and /or change the thermal paste to AS5.

Indeed, clean the heatsink & chip and apply a THIN layer of thermal paste. AS5, Ceramique or similar.
Also check the fan & cooler fins aren't clogged with dust & the fan's running at full speed.

I forgot to mention that, i have tried using lots of thermal paste, medium amount, and hardly any ( the recommended way) and still the same thing. What i used was the cheap kind of thermal paste, but still shouldnt be at 80c. right???

80c is deffo not right dude! Is that the reading in the BOIS? and is the BOIS the latest version? Maybe a BOIS flash could sort it. Mobo temp sensors are notoriusly unreliable
Check in the bois also that the fan is running full speed all the time. And if you installed speedfan perchance, it sometimes interferes with shuttle fan speeds.

yeah before it would run at half that temp with fan at low or medium. i have tried flashing bios using the fb700sk.bin from xpc's site and when i flash it it says "not award flash".

What are the normal voltages for a p4 550. i would imagine the voltages are ok but ya never know. One would think resetting the cmos would reset all that. Thanks for the help so far.

Maybe the heatpipes are damaged? Have you got a spare cooler you can use? Remove the cover & hetpipe assy, fit a replacement & see how it runs.
Failing that, check the clearance & pop down to your local PC shop, or dare I say it .... PC world & pick up a cheap & cheerful jobby to tide you over. If temps go down it's the heatpipe, if not duff mobo sensor.
As for voltages, they should be re-set when clearing the cmos.
