    Pentium III-M, socket 478!?

As I do a lot of computer maintenance work for friends and relatives, who have a wide variety of machines, I like to keep a stock of various cpu's, memory, HDD's etc, all of which I procure at rock bottom prices from Ebay. Last week I picked up a 1.2 ghz Pentium III for £16 and was feeling very pleased with this purchase until I actually recieved it and found that it is a MOBILE Pentium III and is not socket 370 as I had thought, but socket 478 (lesson learned - read ALL of the item description!).
This really surprised me as I was unaware that Intel had used the 478 pin layout prior to the Northwood PIV's.
Anyway, does anyone know if there is a non-laptop motherboard that can take this cpu? It will physically fit in any socket 478 mobo but I'm sure it wouldn't work!

I don't think it's a pre P4 / 478 chip. I'm 99% sure it's a tualatin... It won't be compatible in any P4 or Pentium M board... There *might* be some kind of exotic industrial mobo out there (SBC or such) that could use it but if you can't find a laptop for it then it's pretty much a candidate for a key chain

    got any pics?

i've got a pentium M AOpen XC Cube (as per sig) it's socket 479 - you can get socket 479 adapters to allow pentium m usage in p4 boards (socket 478) - perhaps the 478 chip you've got is a pentium 4-m? although you've got the chip so I'm probably wrong (as it probably says pentium 3-m on it?)

but i guess the chip you've got is probably laptop only?

You could even get a 479 mobo... if it is one.

No, its not socket 479 - that was a Pentium M. Its definitely a Pentium III and its definitely socket 478. It didn't take too long to find the specs using the Intel processor finder:

    http://processorfinder.intel.com/scr...ALL&CorSpd=ALL

    1.2 ghz, 133 mhz FSB, 512 kb L2 cache, socket 478, 1.4v core voltage

I suspect that only laptop motherboards with the 440MX chipset support this cpu. Oh well, I'll just sell it on.
