    Pioneer DVD Writer Trouble 106D

    I formatted my PC a few months ago and i'm sure i've not tried to write an audio cd since. Previous to the format though i have successfully written an audio cd. I can no longer do this. The DVD writer will write DVDs at any speed onto any discs but it will not write CD's. It get to the lead in stage and then spits its dummy out. I've tried writing with Nero 6 and Media Player on various makes of CD. I've looked for updated drivers and can find none although i have found a firmware update. What could be wrong and how can i solve it? Would i be ok installing the firmware or is there a chance of damaging the DVD altogether?

    Not sure i have the answer you are looking for, but regarding the firmware update is it a Pioneer branded drive OR one of the many OEM drives with the pioneer chipset? Because i have been told by someone one a tech support that you need slightly modified versions of the firmware for some drives. You see i have a problem with my Medion DVD writer, which showed up as Pioneer 106 but was told to use the version on medions website.

    Anyway, correct me if im wrong, but don't DVD/CD writers actually have 2 lasers? One for writing DVD's and one for CD's? might be a duff laser but im clutching at straws here.

    Also download and try Feurio. It's a great Audio CD burning app (thats all it does really and very good at it too). It will do drive testing to and it probably has the best error messages i have seen.

    EDIT : See you did the firmware update ok

    Really, go try Feurio;

    Great software to burn audio CDs. Functionality, stability and ease of use is outstanding. Detects many issues about your CD-drives which otherwise would remain uncovered. Highly recommendable.

    Come to think of it, i'm amazed its not more widely used.
