I went down the samsung route for a new HD over the IBMs, good choice in my opinion, after owning an IBM before. I found the deskstar to be really loud.

I'm not familiar with overclocking 3000s so you may well be right. Thuogh I doubt temps, ease of oc and stability would be as good.Originally Posted by BUFF

That looks pretty good, I just got a NEC 3540A to replace my Pioneer 108, mainly due to much faster DAE. I'm quite pleased with it.
I've got 3 of the newer Hitchi's in my PC, they are reasonably quiet. The noisy one was a Maxtor, a high pitched whine, I got rid of it sharpish.Originally Posted by t_aitch

Yeah, great. You'd then be stuck in AGP. Get over Dothan, it's not a viable mainstream option.Originally Posted by dgr
Kinda doubt it: looking on this page:

the power consumption of the P-M is much much less than even a stock 3200, let alone the 3800+. My vcore is under 1.3v at all times, which is a lot less than even my aging Athlon XP system.
So unless power consumption (and thus noise) is quite far down on your list, IMO a P-M system would be favourable to (though perhaps more expensive) a Athlon 64 system.
Curiousity - have you clocked either of your AMD64 systems?

The AMD 64's are great processors and from the perspective of a gamer: much better supported than the P4-M.
A 3000+ can easily get to 2.6GHz and they have been known to get to 2.7-8GHz.
My A64 3200+ gets me to 2.9GHz
AMD64 + NF4 is the way to go IMO
All of them.Originally Posted by dgr
My 3200+ Venice does 2.6GHz at stock 1.4V with a 1200rpm fan on the XP-120 & a passive chipset cooler so it's hardly noisy
If I run Cool'n'Quiet it will vary clockspeed & vcore according to demand.
Reported temps are usually~30C idle & 40C load (although I take those with a grain of salt as I've seen how easily a mfr can change those with a BIOS edit).
I don't disagree about the P M's power usage but you can have an equally quiet, more powerful & cheaper to buy system with AMD64.
Ive got a 3540 on the way now, after sending my 3500 back to svp for the 2ndd time.Originally Posted by Daneel
