Logitech G5 mouse - Any opinions?

Has anyone else bought a G5 yet? What do you think?

I had the MX1000 and was perfectly happy with it.

But when the MX518 came out I thought the higher DPI and being corded might make it better for gaming. I got one and on the whole I liked it. Except it sometimes stops tracking on an Icemat (especially where my sweaty little finger leaves smears), and it has a habit of picking up hairs or fluff in front of the lens, sending it mad.

Aha, I thought! What I need is an always-on, corded mouse with high DPI and a laser. Enter the G5.

Bought one, got it this morning, and guess what. It doesn't work on an Icemat. At all. Not on a black one. Not on a white one. What a disappointment. I thought the whole point of the laser was better tracking.

I suspect they've cut down the power of the laser on the G5 because it's always on.

Damn you, Logitech. What a stupid thing to do.

I think it does say somewhere that u shouldnt use it on glass. I very much doubt they have cut down the power of the lazer. My suggestion is buy another mouse mat.
Either Alienware Func 1030 for under a tenner or a steelpad/corepad. There is no fault in the mouse tbh, its jsut uve put it on the wrong surface. Ive read v good reviews of this mouse, so if you like the feel and the performance(which WILL be good) , get another mat.

Yes , it says on the box that it may not work on plain glass.
Not much use to me as I ordered by mail.
Logitech's website just says "provides best-in-class performance and tracking."
Well, the mx518 and MX1000 track better in my case, so I disagree that the G5 is best-in-class.
The Icemat is not plain glass - it is frosted/microtextured on the top surface.
As for getting another mat, the Icemat is the only one I prefer to a plain desk. All 3 mice work just fine on the desk.

ye, i have a Qpad, very good mouse mat and reletively cheap aswell. I've known people have problem with their MX1000 on Icemat's before and others that haven't apart from when you move the mouse very quickly, so with the G5 being laser aswell you'd expect the same sort of problem i guess. Ah well, i guess this is an issue Logitech & Icemat may have to work on to sort the problem, if they feel it'll benefit each other that is.
