    Volcano 12 results

2.3Ghz, 1.7v (mb over volts to 1.73v), AS3, side panel on, but only been priming for about 10-15mins:

Not that bad considering before, my 6Cu gets up to 72-75C and certainly hasn't lasted this long priming (5mins max).

BTW, the new cooler hasn't really helped me in getting 2.5Ghz as I hoped. It seems the CPU's limit is around 2.45Ghz. And yes, the +12v line is scary but I'll live with it until I can afford to get a new PSU.

Rod911? how much are these volcano heatsink and fans, sounds good..

Do they run a lot better than the x-dream, do you know?

I bought mine for AU$62. I really can only compare my older 6Cu heatsink with what I've got now, so I really don't know whether the X-Dream will perform better/worse than the Volcano 12. If it helps, I recommend the V12 highly, but it is weighty...so be careful if you move your computer around.

The temps are from the diode so what you see will be higher than using Asus probe which does not utilise the diode but the in-socket sensor.

The sweet spot for noise vs performance would have to be between 2400-3100RPMs. Same setup, but running F@H, down to 2500RPMs and the max temp I've seen is 54C.

For those wondering whether I'm still priming, well, Prime95 sucks on my machine big time and only lasted 30mins...still longer than the 5mins I'm use to. Even relaxing memory timings and increasing vCore does not help.

For me, I don't mind failing Prime95, but just as long as the system is stable whilst I'm folding, then everything's sweet.

Volcano12 should be a little step up from the Volcano11 which is an excellent and cheap HSF. The CM Xdream is known to be a little inferior but cheaper than the Volcano11 (and 9 but closer). The Xdream doesn't quite cool as well, doesn't have as good a fan and makes a little more noise ... but all that is being a little picky. Rod911 you should find running a lower voltage will help you run much cooler meaning you can lower the fan and run quieter too, that may also help you get Prime stable although really 30min is good enough. Most find Barton XP2500+ is happy undervolted to around 2.0ghz (XP2800+ish with 400FSB) so you should find 2.2ghz (XP3200+) doable with lower voltages, may be Prime stable and cooler/quieter too.

    Thanks rod911, AU$62 seems expensive.

Oh well i'll stick with my x-dream (Noisey as it is)

    Thanks again m8

Already tried several voltages. "1.675v" (it's in inverted commas b/c my mb over-volts), is quite good @ 2.3Ghz. "1.7v" seems to be more stable, especially whilst I'm folding.

Oh yeah, 2500RPMs is helluva quiet and still maxes out at 55C. 4000-4500RPMs lower temps by 6C, whereas at full-tilt lowers it a further 1C. My case cooling is crap BTW, with only 2 80mm out take fans (1 PSU and 1 case fan). But the whole set-up is as quiet as before, but temps are up to 20C cooler.

EDIT: I wish my mb allowed me to undervolt. 1.65v is the minimum.

    Just lapped it.

My room temp is very similar as to when the screenshot was taken last night (20C). After lapping, it stabilised to being 3-4C cooler for the CPU, but for some odd reason, the system temp has also been reduced by the same margin.
