Computer taking ages to load background programs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys,
I have realized that whenever I turn on my computer it starts up fine! I get onto the desktop and I can open opera browser and use the interent, but no other programs will load! If I try to open any programs they wont load, only after about 4-5 mins of being on the desktop all the background programs suddenley load
anyone know how to fix this?

Virus scanner could be causing this. If it is a virus scanner doing a scan every time you load windows, you don't really need to do that. I would suggest turning that feature of and doing it once a week at a more convinent time.

Also use MSCONFIG to trim down what you are loading at boot. You really don't need all that real player etc crap running all the time.

May want to give the old registry a spring clean too. A bloated registry will slow things down a lot too.

I have norton antivirus, but i turned off the scan all the time function. So should I use disk defrag to speed it up, because ive never defragged because my family have said it isnt too good for the HD to defrag

You could try a defrag, but i have never really seen much of an increase in XP. Used to more on win98. Worth a try, it wont hurt and will probably help a bit.

Maybe a list of all your start-up items would be handy to see.

Well the programs I have on startup are SOUNDMAN, ccapp, usrprmpt, SNDmon, Ntray, 2 blank ones, my pc controller, PSDrvcheck, cli. Most of them are norton internet security but im not sure about some of them

Peer guardian does that if your using it. Either that or norton as some have suggested.

Dont have peer guardian, so it must be norton! Stupid norton !
