    Basic n00b question

    But I'm really stumped -

    - on motherboards

What is the additional square power connector (with 4 jumpers) for ?

My old Socket A board didn't have such a socket, only the large main one, but my new board has both, only it doesn't seem to make a difference wether it is connected or not !

2 yellow and 2 black? it's for P4 boards - they use extra power for er, something which is why your socket A board won't have it

Just makes P4 boards more stable i think

For stuffing extra power into your mobo. Allows for more overclocking potential and stability.

It must be Abit NF7-S v2.0 then I presume? It's simply there as an optional plug (on SktA mobos) which helps to supply the mobo with plenty of sustained and stable voltage. Don't worry if your PSU lacks the plug, you can get an adapter (IIRC) or else save up for a new PSU, pref a decent brand of 350W+.

    Close - Abit KD7A

My PSU does have the additional connector, and its plugged it.

I just wondered what it is for

The adapters should be avoided according to the intel website as they are not guaranteed to provide the correct voltage...

dont buy it myself but its there anyway...

Abit KD7A is KT400A 333FSB right? Then again I seriously doubt nForce2 Ultra400 need the extra plug anyway, probably just there for show. SmileyUK if that's true it would be more to do with the cheap crappy 'P4 ready' PSUs that come bundled with most cases than anything else. Those rarely provide decent voltage on ANY line let alone the 'P4' plug.
