should I get an opteron 146

I could sell my current a64 3000 for around £60 and add another 60 to this and get an opty 146

my venice 3000 should do 2.4-2.6 ghz (what others have got with the same batch)

is the 10x muilti and the larger cache worth £60?

I play fps and stratagy games, the cpuy will be overclocked, I have an asus a8n sli and a 6800gt for other specs, see my system

Is it worth £60 to get the opty?

Not really no. Almost all games are GPU not CPU bound these days. You'd see a far bigger difference selling your 6800gt and getting a 7800gt.

When you bear in mind that 2.4-2.6ghz overclock on a 3000+ makes it equivalent to a 3800+ or to an FX-55 you wouldn't be worrying at all if you had either of those processors.

I'd second that - as dark horse says, most FPS are getting shader heavy so a better GPU will more beneficial IMO. mind you, looking at your sys profile, i think that would be better of gettting a monitor that is more that 1024x768 (unless thats wron) as you are kinda bottlenecking a good CPU/GPU combo there!!!

not all opterons clock that well, so if you do decide to buy one, make sure you get one that beats your current cpu, but as the guys above said, getting a 1900xt or 78gt is more beneficial

Thats BOTH the monitors that i was toying with getting - still havent made up my mind either!!

Also, as far as games and widescreen, check this link and it has fixes for most games - you can even see screenshots before/after, and the forums are very helpful:

my wife is running 6800GT as well and it takes 1440x900..

Most games do support widescreen.. The only one I can think of that DOESNT is NFSMW.. I was stuck with 1024x768 on that one.. but no biggy, cranked up the AA and its almost as good as 1600x1200 wif no AA..

The ones that does.. like FEAR, man.. its damn sweet.. 1440x900 gives a much wider perspective, and GTR + GT Legends on widescreen is just uber sweet...

Just thought you'd like to know I got an Opty 146 from Scan last week code is CACJE (do a google search) currently at 2.7Ghz @ 1.45V I'm going to post my final results in the large opty thread when I'm done. Hoping to get 2.8Ghz + Not so much as a sniff of an error yet and cpu is 33C idle.

did you notice any significant performance gain over the previous cpu? Ive been toying with the idea of a decent opteron for ages now - what do people think? Will i notice a big performance jump given my pc's specs over the current s754 3200???
