Well, afaik they're really just 939s fitted with a DDR2 controller on a reengineered 940 pin wafer...
The manuf process never changed, so you're not going to see much of a clock bump anyways..
Unless AMD comes up with like say a 3 gate extension to give headroom for scaling while sacrificing some efficiency.. But thats unlikely to happen, esp with Intel and Netburst in the dust..
Me want Ultrabook
supposedly 6/6/06 ...
not much speed diffrence for first generation, but you will see nice performance on that socket in the future, ie quad core, and new high end processers
Is it worth buying it when it coems out, or sticking with 939 until they are improved? Will 939 chips and mobos drop in price when AM2 is released?

Depends how far the ends are apart.
Unless you already have memory that you want to re-use, I expect AM2 will become the standard to have once it is out. It won't be slower than 939, so I don't see any reason to avoid it now that DDR2 memory is the same price or cheaper.Originally Posted by GFiSH
I wouldn't expect much of a drop. The AM2 stuff might start off more expensive thoughOriginally Posted by GFiSH
For ages an A64 3000+ would cost the same on S754 as it did on S939 (though the motherboards for S939 tended to be better spec and more expensive). Only now that S754 is about to be obsoleted, the prices have dropped.
AM2 all the way, atleast its open upgrade path
until socket AM3 the year after ...
I am not convinced that it is worth holding an upgrade for AM2 now. Unless you can hold until 6+ months after the AM2 is released.
I suspect that early AM2 mobos will have its share of issues... and by the time Quad-core is released, there would be much better AM2 mobos around. So you'll probably want to upgrade then again anyway.
