Quick hard drive question

I bought a 7200.10 250GB Seagate Barracuda 16mb Cache, SATA 2 drive, to replace my borked WD.

On the label of the drive it says the model is only the 7200.9, which is obviously slower, and not what i payed for.

Is there a way i can check which model i have?

You can use Everest Home Edition (Google it, second link down from Majorgeeks), and it'll tell you there.

Otherwise, you can just go into Device Manager, find the new drive (assuming it's installed) under Disk Drives, and put the device name (beings with ST, followed by several numbers) into Google. Whatever Google tells you (i.e. whether it's the .9 or the .10) will answer your question.

To be honest though, if the label says .9, it's bound to be a .9.

Just done a quick search on the Seagate website, got the tech specs (bloody hate adobe acrobat - need to get foxit). Anyway, have gt the following:

The 7200.10 250GB model number is: ST3250620A (with or without an S on the end).
The 7200.9 250GB model number is: ST3250824AS or 624AS.

So a Zero before the last letter means a newer '10' model, otherwise you have a '9' model.

Guess it's going back to scan. And i thought they were the best?

There are pretty good, but everyone makes mistakes. I'm likely to believe it's a genuine error and they will swap it no probs.

Dont be to harsh on them - you are much more likely to get a favourable result being nice than nasty, even if you do feel pissed off...
That said i do remember one particular time i had a real go at this BT sales woman (i was 18 at the time and not too experienced), who i had been on hold and passed around for about an hour (at my expense from a BT phone box - cost about £5 by then) and i was raving at her, and she threatened to hang up on me. I was fuming at the service BT had given me but recognised it wasnt her personally - very annoying though.

Im not nasty, but iam hardly going to be pleased. Now i gotta wait 4 more days at least, for my real drive, and pay for the shipping back to them.

Oh i agree it's not a happy situation, but all i'm saying is that you need a cool head to figure out what's the best way of getting the best, quickest, correct result for yourself. Think 'Spock'.

Are you sure you have to pay shipping back to them? If they sent you the wrong item they cover shipping.

what's the difference between the .9 and .10 I'm intrigued since I only buy seagate drives?

Well from the tech details it's the cache. .10 has 16mb, the other has 8. Some benchies would help ill google for some.

The .10s use perpendicular recording, which is basically allowing greater data capacity and performace. The .10s are a fair bit quicker than the .9s.

Are they? Cause ive heard back from scan, and they haven't got any 10's in, so i can either get a refund or get a 7quid discount.

I think ill get the full refund, and buy from elsewhere.

For 7 quid and a few days hasstle I'd have the .10, it'll work out better in the long run

I'd get the refund too. The extra performance if the .10 is certainly worth the £7. Might as welll have the newest stuff available, after all.
