thumbs down to both sony and LG. sony for being slightly odd and iffy, although 99% of the time its pretty quick. LG because i had to deal with one at work that would jam up and require the good old bent paperclip A LOT
and my Goldstar 2x CD-ROM was so good aswell. what happened?!

avoid LG and Sony`s both have had problems in the past.
Go for BenQ or NEC.
Pioneer always for me, tbh there isnt alot of diffence anymore. Just stay clear of Sony my bro had lots of prob with them
I have a Sony DW-D26A and it has been nothing but trouble, it no longer reads any disc reliably (or at all in most cases), but will for some reason still produce perfect copys of iso's, cd's and dvd's so long as they are read from my other dvd drive or hard disc.Originally Posted by dave87
Another vote for NEC.
I had a look at a thread on CDFreaks and also the reviews of the Pioneer and NEC drives before opting for the NEC.
how strange - I had an ASUS DVD-ROM (e616 i think) which was perfect up until the day it switched machines, and is now as picky as hellOriginally Posted by Golden Dragoon
well my ASUS has been super ever since its first night off with me.. ..Originally Posted by dave87

Me want Ultrabook
I really don't like the NECs......I purchased 2 different models for HTPCs recently, based on their 'quietness', yet both models were noisey as hell!
Currently runnning a LiteOn with LightScribe but about to go back to Plextor....

my girlfriend just bought a HP lite scribe and its awesome only 27 pounds over at scan (dvd rw)
edit for the guy above, i am running a NEC its very good very fast , yes it does make noise like when you watch a DVD , however get yourself onto google and type in cd bremse (its german) this can turn down the rpm of the drive and will play your dvd's without making one db of noise
I always find LG cheap, but very good.
very true but i just dont like the korean make
there all pretty much cheap as chips nowdays anyway
any good SATA models?
Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2Ghz (400Mhzx8) 1.52V (set in bios, 1.47v real) | 4GB GeIL PC6400 4-4-4-12 | Gigabyte DQ6 @ 1600Mhz | HD2900XT 1GB | Enermax Infiniti 720W | Silverstone TJ07-B with custom watercooling | BenQ FP241WZ
3dmark05 - 13140 | 3dmark06 - 6698 | SuperPi 1M - 15s
I think the best SATA DVD-RW is the Plextor 755SA
The next model (760SA) leaves a lot to be desired in comparison I beleive. You can currently count the number of SATA DVD-RWs using the fingers on 1 hand......
